I almost gave up on this book early on, but man am I glad I didn’t. Eve’s story was interesting and heart wrenching, and the author did a wonderful job of intertwining Charlie’s story into it. This is no only a great spy novel, but also a novel about female strength and perseverance. Absolutely recommend!

Started this while on vacation. Just could not get very interested. The libby time expired before I finished. Thought about not finishing but went ahead and got on the list to re-borrow. MEH. The Alice Network was a group of women spies during WWI. Evelyn was recruited because she was fluent in French, German and English. She was sent to the French countryside to work as a waitress in a German occupied town. The man that owned the restaurant was a french citizen that collaborated with the Germans. Rene. He was evil. He took Evelyn (marguerite) as a lover. When Eve was caught with her direct superior in the spy network Lili, Rene tortured Eve by breaking her fingers and knuckles with a marble but of Bauldaire. The other part of the story was about Charlotte St. Clair (charlie). She was in search of her cousin Rose who disappeared during WWII. The time for the stories alternated between 1916-1919 and 1946-49. I did not care for the Charlie part of the story at all for some reason. As a character, I did not find her interesting or even really developed. Of course she falls in love with Finn who is Evelyn’s driver as they go through France to search for Rose and Evelyn to find and kill Rene.

This was an action-packed piece of historical fiction. The characters are fun and compelling, and by the end, this became a page-turner. Four stars for being a bit too lengthy.

4.5 rounded up to 5. A combination of reading and listening really helped to make this an engaging read. I did not know about this spy network and it was interesting to go off on my own and do some more research. Saskia Maarleveld the narrator, truly brought this story to life. So many voices and accents and Eve Gardiner's stutter and ensuing frustration with what she called her "hitched tongue" were performed to perfection by Ms. Maarleveld. Recommended reading and/or listening.
