What Made Maddy Run: The Secret Struggles and Tragic Death of an All-American Teen

In depth and insightful book about Madison. It delves deep into the importance of mental health and the struggles young adults encounter as they transition into college.
This book broke my heart into pieces and opened my eyes to so many things. Want to hug all of my students.
Very sad story of a promising young woman. Some things that I didn't love about this book was the author's occasional (long) interjections about her experience in college sports/with college athletic stress and the lack of direct insight from her family and perhaps care givers that could have given more information to her mental state. The ending felt rushed and it feels like some information was left out - perhaps on purpose, but it would have made this work a bit stronger IMO.

I am not in the right mindset to read this it hits a little too close to home
Such a tragic and heartbreaking story. I listened to the story in one walk. I just could not put it down. Everybody should not only learn a lesson from Matty's story, but also take action to prevent things like this from happening. When I say everybody, I mean, parents, children and friends. Life itself is valuable, but most of the time, we just take it for granted. In everybody else's eyes, Matty lives in a life which is already admired by most of people. Eating disorder was mentioned in the book and I am wondering if that causes the last jump. The part that her dad insisted "seeing is believing" made me cry. I cannot image the sorrow is engraved in the minds of her family member forever. What can we do? How can we help? Maybe ourselves, maybe others.
So heartbreaking, yet such an important read for anyone, especially parents of young Athletes, college students, high school etc...we are facing a totally different generation of young adults who have a tremendous amount of pressure. The perception over the reality when it comes to social media, and the mental effects it has on the human mind is such an eye opener, and can be so destructive.
Kate Fagan brought Maddy to life for me, I feel like I was living through her pain as I turned each page. I’ll never forget her, and her struggle. This story has had such a huge impact, and EVERYONE needs to read it. Maybe we can save a future Madison Holleran, or at least learn how maybe we can make a difference.
I feel the pain so deeply for Maddy’s Family, having college kids myself. It is such a hard transition, the intense pressure of getting in to college, thinking it all needs to go exactly as planned. We hope and pray they figure it out. Being a parent is tough, I can’t imagine what they are going through.
Rip angel Maddy

A thoughtful, sensitive and compelling look at Maddy Holleran’s life, struggles and death. It was interesting to see how social media didn’t help Maddy feel connected enough to confide in anyone about her struggles. It’s clear she placed immense pressure on herself to be perfect.
I really didn’t like the way the book was structured. I think the author could have woven facts and statistics throughout the text without having to center herself in the story.

I just finished this book. And I’m sad. So, so sad. It will take me awhile to process all I’ve read and all I’ve learned and to grapple with all the reasons why a healthy, beautiful, talented, much-loved teen could do what she did. But I know it’s important to try to understand why, to learn all I can about mental illness and to try to grasp the fact that there is so much pressure on our young people today.
That is why this book is important.
