It's been a while since the last time I devoured a book this fast.

This one is the 1st book in a duology. Careful, 2nd book isn't out yet I found out about that only after finishing the book.
It has an interesting ending that I saw coming, closing the book with it makes sense- it doesn't leave us angry, LOL.

The characters, plot, and chemistry are well done and delivered at the right pace.
I enjoyed the banter between the MMC and FMC, there is an understanding between them that seeps into their interactions and conversations.
It was one of my favorite things in the book. I loved their relationship even when they were still not 100 percent open they were trying to while keeping their walls up to protect themselves. which is something I find so relatable and understandable.
I feel that sometimes we allow ourselves to trust others only when they prove it to us or after it's too late.

we have two morally grey MCs that are so deep in the dark side. we have pirates and mercenaries that are rare for me to read about, which made me now more intrigued and curious to read more in this genre.

The blend between the genres is smooth and fresh.
couldn't put it down.✨️

I loved this book so much! The enemies to lovers was done so well, and I'm so appreciative of that. So many books claim that and don't deliver. Well, this one does!

I loved Jane, she's a freakin blast! She's so sassy and ruthless and just a whole dang mood. And Soren was all kinds of

The Council at Skull’s Row is looking for a particular woman and Soren, who is part of the Council, wants to know why and so sets out to find said woman. What he finds is this intriguing woman called Jane who is fierce, ready to put up a fight and who has many secrets. Who is she?

This read was not what I was expecting! I was expecting a dark romance, but a fantasy with magic and a morally grey pirate/mercenary world added in was not what I was expecting! And it has its dark moments, which at times came as a surprise, and I have to say, this is the first dark romance book I actually enjoyed! I have a hard time with dark romances, but this mixed with the magic, the pirate like world, and characters that are a lot of fun to read about made this book a lot of fun to read!

Soren I am so unsure of and I love a character that keeps me guessing as to what their intentions are and he’s scary good with his empath skills

⭐ARC Review⭐

The Secrets of Jane: Forgotten follows Jane, a woman who has been hiding her identity for ten years. When her life is upended and she is forced to confront the past she has been running from, she must rely on a morally grey Zenith named Soren to help her.

I loved this from the 1st page. Give me morally grey mercenaries like Soren any day. The book is so well-written and the characters are well-developed. Jane is a fiery and independent FMC, and Soren is a complex and very intriguing anti-hero. And the banter, which I absolutely loved, between the two is fantastic and witty, and the sexual tension and slow-burn romance was perfectly developed and so steamy. The world-building is also very impressive. Mallory has created a rich and detailed world that I was able to fully immerse myself in while reading. Overall, this book is definitely an enjoyable read for fans of dark fantasy romance. I highly recommend and I can see myself re-reading in the future and in preparation for book 2.

Thank you so so much to Charlotte Mallory for the opportunity to ARC read this book. It is definitely one of my favorite reads this year.

An enemies to lovers, runaway heroine, romance, set in a fantastic World, where a few are gifted with magic, the people are vicious, and where witches and sirens hold all the cards!

Jane is a young healer, who lives in a quiet village, and spends her nights having fun with her friend Kathleen, never trusting men, and breaking a few noses and leaving a few crushed egos in her wake. Until one night, as their make their way back to their village, they smell smoke, and Jane discovers that her World is in flames, and the life she left behind, is coming for her.

The secrets she tried to bury, inside her cold lonely heart, begin to be unravelled by Soren, the vicious Zenith, sent to retrieve her.

Who is Jane, and why is the Skull's Row Council, the most vivious group of people to ever walk these shores want her?

In case you're not quite sure who to trust, be like Jane, and trust no one....

I was kindly sent an ARC of this book, but this review reflects my honest opinion of the book.

I did really enjoy this book. Jane is a strong female protagonist. Which, you can never go wrong with an independent female lead. This made her a very good match to Soren. Even when Jane was trying to outwit him, he was still following right close behind. All this built up to angst.

When Soren and Jane gave in to the chemistry, it was all "green light". They went from zero to hundred...fast. I savored these spicy moments between them. Although, the sharp barbs they traded with each other was very entertaining as well. Yet, just when I thought I could not be more hooked, the author leaves me with a cliffhanger! Looking to fill up your day, then pick up a copy of The Secrets of Jane, you won't regret it!

4.5. I will officially buy any book this author releases! This book was so bloody good!

Jane is very strong, sassy, violent and fiery. She’s also protective and caring to those she cares about. She has her own complex issues in which we see her crave love but she has serious trust issues and doesn’t open up to people. I seriously understood her and loved her.

Soren is everything I love about morally gray men. He does a lot of questionable shit, he’s violent and he’s known for being a killer. He is also possessive and hot af but underneath all of that he is also gentle and sweet just for Jane.

The chemistry, banter and tension between these two was to die for. I loved their relationship development and the smut was so good without overshadowing their emotional connection.

I don’t really understand how the magic works but I’m intrigued to learn more!

I can’t wait for the next book!

So, this book took me a really long time to finish. It was easy to read, in the sense that the dialogue and world were not difficult to understand. The thing that made it tough was maybe that characters were not super likable to me. Full disclosure - they’re murderous, angry, impulsive people, but both main characters tiptoe around sentences like ‘rapaciously looking her over’ as so regular and I was cringing hard at this. I’ve read dark romance that I enjoyed in the past (though honestly not my favorite at this time), and I did still like parts of this, but I found myself a bit taken aback a lot of the time with some of the wildness of the main characters inner monologues. The book ends on a MAJOR cliffhanger - which I genuinely enjoy in most novels. This book however, did not satisfy one single issue or major plot point being resolved. From someone who likes to have the carrot dangled at the end to excite me to read the next book, I also like a minor plot point or two closed by the end of a 400+ page novel. Again, the author can write well, but this was not for me and left me wholly unsatisfied.
