A little too much time was spent on her being a traumatized nervous wreck for my taste but Cate C Wells just understands how to execute a grovel and I ate it up. I also really liked the shifter dynamics and history that was explored in this. Maybe it wasn’t my favorite of the series but I devoured it as usual.

Annie has been a background character throughout the Five Packs novels. You see her dealing with crippling anxiety and fear.
It’s satisfying to finally find out the reasons behind this.
Justus and Annie are young when they first meet and he makes mistakes. He doesn’t understand Annie’s reactions and he lets his pride get in the way.
Both characters show personal growth and Justus’ ability to recognize and admit his mistakes while supporting Annie help him find redemption.

So here's the thing-
Justus is the feminist king we didn't know we needed, but this male is *everything*.
I wasn't sure I was going to like this book in the series. I mean, Justus didn't make a *great* impression with the whole kidnapping Una, Mari, Annie, and Kennedy thing. But it turns out, like so much of life, looks can be deceiving.
I will admit, this was a hard read because like Annie, my PTSD manifests itself in the form of overwhelming intrusive thoughts and a "pecking voice" (I love that description. I usually just call the annoying PTSD voice in my head the heaux voice, but pecking voice is probably better for mixed company). I found myself growing irritated with Annie's constant fear... But that was intentional because Annie absolutely felt fed up with it too. This was incredible PTSD representation, so incredible that it was hard to read at times. It made the stakes feel so much higher because, like Annie, the reader wants to scream "Just get over it! See what's in front of you!". You really feel the frustration and hopelessness right alongside Annie as she navigates her relationship with Justus and her new pack.
Oh, and did I mention how absolutely incredible Justus is? This is a man who isn't afraid of saying "I was wrong" and doing better. He is someone who has a clear view of himself and isn't ashamed to see his own flaws and fix them. I thought how he handled Annie's PTSD was realistic- you can love someone with PTSD until the cows come home but that doesn't mean it's not frustrating for a loved one who gets caught in the crossfire of the packing voice.
I loved seeing our old favorites pop up in the story (Killian being the voice of reason an calm cracked me up) and I LOVED the bonus epilogue. Tye and Kennedy- I can't wait!!!
I received an ARC, read it, cried, read it again, still fried, but I was finally able to review... With a few sniffles.

Can I say I have mixed feelings? I love Cate C. Wells, her writing style is top-notch and I'm always looking forward to her books. But this one left a sense of "not fast enough, and too fast at the end". We met Annie in previous books and Justus during the last book, so the author does that where she leaves you wanting to know more about these new mysterious characters. But this one did drag up until 70% of the book and then when we got to the good part, it was rushed into two chapters. Don't get me wrong, I love a good grovel, but Annie didn't find her backbone until chapter 14 (and there are 15 chapters in this book). The level of patience from Jusuts puts saints to shame. I thought he was great, he was funny, he was sincere (well, except at the beginning but emotions were running high). Overall, it was good... just slow and then rushed.

This book is so emotional. I loved reading how this beautiful romance slowly develops. The title of the book could apply to both the hero and heroine in this story as you read their point of views. They each felt the pain of their mate’s rejection. With one exception, Justus is such a sweet, tender, caring alpha. He is absolutely the perfect match for the timid, anxious Annie. I’m so happy that Annie gets her happy ending. I enjoyed reading this book so much and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Queen Cate has done it again! This book is yet another example of two characters growing emotionally in a healthy way. Cate has given us an MMC who is goofy and silly and yet still is strong and caring. The FMC is able to grow from her fear not because of her mate but because of her own character arc.
I will say going into this I was a bit disappointed at the MCs she chose, only because there are other character stories from the world I wanted to read more, but as always I am delighted by the storytelling craft she has. Biting at the bit for more.
Also, I did crossover to her other series and fell in love with that world, too.
Highly recommend!!
