Ender in Exile

A good read, though the ending felt a bit tacked on to me.

It's like Orson Scott Card ate a bowl of uncooked oatmeal dowsed liberally in vinegar and then wrote this book..

I did enjoy this book, but I probably should have read this after all the other books, which is my fault. However it was still very enjoyable and with a read, if you're a fan of the series. Might reread this after I've read the Shadow series.

It's been a long while since I last read the Ender series, so any discrepancies between Ender in Exile and Ender's Game and subsequent novels went totally unnoticed by me. I did have the feeling that Card was getting overly preachy in portions but I didn't mind since I happened to agree. Most of it was excellent and enjoyable, though I thought certain parts that were skipped over since they were implied by later discourse would have made it somewhat more interesting. However, I understand why they're not thoroughly discussed: they didn't need to be.

Between 3 and 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and loved reading about Ender and his thoughts and secret machinations again. On the minus side, Valentine was extremely annoying in this one and the antagonist(s) weak. It was neat to see the books The Hive Queen and The Hegemon, among others, being written during the events of this book.

I enjoyed this book. Definitely not for anyone who hasn't already read most, if not all of the other Ender books, since all of the action in this book happens between chapters 14 and 15 of Ender's Game and makes references to many of the other Ender and Shadow books. However, if you are an Ender fan, this book does a good job continuing the mood and philosophy of the previous novels. Ender has won the formic war and really can't safely come back to Earth - the various nations would most likely try to kill him to keep any another nation from getting him. He is therefore relegated to helping colonize the conquered formic planets and monitor the events on Earth from afar. It was a little too corny at the end (typical Card), or I would have given it 4 stars.

Ender in Exile is the story of Ender and the other characters of Ender's Game just after the latter novel. It's also necessary have read before the Shadow's Series, because there are so many characters and facts there told that have their consequences in Ender in Exile. If you haven't read those you can be a bit lost.

Both the Shadow's Series and the Ender's Series refer some of the decisions made after the war against formics, but they don't explain them. Here you are what happened. It's the boom of the soldier after the war.

I like the 'Endervese', and I've read almost every book Card has written about (except for the trilogy of the first formic war). I really loved the classic Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow and enjoyed too some of the books in both the series. But here occurs like in too many successful series in which the author continues writing and writing, though quality decreases increasingly.

I guess it's not his fault. While people like me continue reading these stories he'll continue writing. I love Ender and all the Enverse and I enjoy reading about him, but each time a little less.

4.5/5

I dont have words to explain how much I love the whole Enderverse!! This book is just like the others: amazing and brilliant.
