This book is so pure. I love Betty Smith. I need to track down everything she wrote.

My favorite book is A Tree Grows In Brooklyn so I've always wanted to read Betty Smith's other books. It's not quite as great as her most famous novel, but it has a lot of the same magic. Annie sometimes bothers me as a character because she's so naive - but that's also the main plot, is about how young she and her husband are when they rush into a marriage.

So, read A Tree Grows In Brooklyn first. And if you want to dig further into her work, then maybe read this one later.

This is a cute little book about a newly married couple and their struggles. Their families do not approve of the match and do not support them. He is in law school. They are always tight on cash. The novel tells the story of their lives. Uplifting and cute.

I really love this book. I love Annie's character and how she finds joy in everything.

What a delightful book! One of those books that doesn't necessarily need a big storyline - i was so content to curl up on the lounge with a blanket and read about Carl and Annie, and all the good and bad times in their first year of marriage. I find it odd that i read this and not A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but i am now so excited to read that next!

Joy in the Morning is such a lovely look at a couple's first year of marriage. Betty Smith has a beautiful way of writing that makes you feel cozy and completely at home, and this novel is no different.

I was nervous to revisit this book after last having read it in my late teens. But Betty Smith TOTALLY delivers, and this holds up after decades of my own life and many more decades post-publication.

Smith hits the nail on the head in so many ways; her experience of young marriage being somewhat similar to mine, I especially appreciate the character of Annie and how much I identify with her. Smith's pacing is absolutely masterful-- her ability to drop into moments and then move the story forward is what makes her writing so brilliant.

Not as enjoyable as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn or Maggie Now but this book was a nice read about a couples struggle through their first year of marriage.
