Felt like this was very predictable. The main points I predicted almost straight away, the wrap up parts were already noticed etc. nothing too out there, but once I got about 60% through it became more interesting and I actually wanted to know what happened. Before that not so much.

In Have We Met? after losing her best friend to cancer, Corinne has moved back to Chicago, wanting to figure out her next career move. A dating app called Met mysteriously appears on her phone (kind of like how that U2 album suddenly popped up on our iPhones out of nowhere years ago?) promising that Cori will be reconnected with four people from her past & and one of these connections is her ✨soulmate✨
I’ve shared before that soulmates isn’t my favorite trope and can be hit or miss for me. This worked. I thought the app/soulmate connection was an interesting concept. The magic of the dating app at times felt like more explanation was needed, so you just have to accept it for what it is.
Was the romance predictable? Yes. Regardless, I enjoyed seeing the relationship play out. What I liked about this story overall was its simplicity. A Black woman just navigating her life: work, love, grief/loss & growth.
Corinne was able to just ✨exist✨without much drama, trauma or explanation, and I loved that for her. I loved that for me too, as the reader 😌
[CW: grief, cancer, death of a friend]

This was a cute romance but nothing really to write home about. I liked all of the characters and there was definitely character growth but it was pretty predictable.
I started this on the plane coming back from Portugal and I found it such an easy, light read. I liked the concept of the story and the moral. I thought that Corinne was quite a strong character in the book - she held her ground but was quite open to change and the growing-up concept of life.
The dating app that she had on her phone, Met was weird but definitely a great concept to adding some spice to the story and also funny that every guy she met, she thought was from the dating app.
I enjoyed how Camille brought some very modern day characters to the book (i.e. non-binary, bi etc) and how Corinne fell in love with someone out-with the dating app.
It was an easy read and one I enjoyed whilst flying. I would recommend if you are looking for a quick read but one that is romantic, cute and upbeat.

I didn’t really like reading this book.’mostly because I don’t like instalove or friends-to-lovers tropes
cute read
It was a very cute read and very diverse. Differently abled, race, sexuality. It didn't feel forced and not all of these points were a major plot point which adds to the normalization of inclusion. Worth a read for that alone.
Seems like there is an opening for future books and I'll definitely give those a read as well.

Have We Met? by Camille Baker was a coming-of-age story for the young adult who is dealing with life coming at her from multiple places. Corinne has just moved back to Chicago and is processing the loss of her best friend to cancer (not a spoiler), when she discovers a new dating app on her phone. The weird thing is she didn’t download it and it doesn’t seem to exist anywhere else.
That’s the extent of “magical realism” so if that’s not your genre, don’t run the other direction. It probably shouldn’t have this genre label, it’s just this teeny bit of make believe.
The app tells Corinne that four missed connections from her past will reappear, and one is her soulmate. She starts paying closer attention to the people in her life, while juggling her career, her friendships, and her grief. I appreciated the LGBTQ+ representation and that it was simply woven into the characters’ experiences.
The story has touches of romance and dating, but it felt more accurate to call it contemporary fiction that feels borderline YA. I love YA and thought this was a cute read, but if you need more grown-up situations or more mature processing of grief, feelings, and family situations then this might feel a bit youthful to you.
Book number 2 in the series, The Moment We Met, came out this year and I’m curious to see another character encounter the app. Let me know if you’ve read it!
