This was a perfect, light summer read! I really like the 1st person perspective, it really makes this a fast, easy read. And I also like how the whole book is just from Shay's perspective. A lot of romance novels I've read recently have alternated perspectives and that really takes away a lot of tension since you always know exactly how the other person is feeling.

Shay and Dominic's banter was so funny and I especially loved the podcast chapters. Their chemistry was SO GOOD and really believable. Dominic was actually so perfect I loved him. There was a 5 year age gap between them, but they honestly felt the same age to me since Shay was kind of immature (if it wasn't for the fact that she CONSTANTLY brought up the fact that she was 29, I definitely would've thought she was younger). And all the side characters were pretty cool but a bit boring as they weren't very well developed which I guess is pretty common in books like this. Steve (the dog) was definitely the star of the book lol.

I wanted something funny to cheer me up but at the end this book made me angry and so much bored. It was lame with both male (weak, uncool, even pathetic) and female(boring, uninteresting, horny dumb)main characters. I didn't like it at all!!

Book 54 Review - The Ex Talk By Rachel Lynn Solomon - Fun but Complex

Another rom com I picked up in a set of birthday gifts for myself this year. Something about rom coms always tends to boost up my spirits and make everything brighter I guess, not in the sense of fantasy, but something about broken spirits melding together with a dose of banter and comedy thrown in makes me happy.

This book started with a bang, I loved the two main characters Shay and Dominic, an Asian male lead thrown in, a definite bonus for a kdrama stan, the banter and the frenemies equation between them was so much fun to read.

Shay, loved her, could connect with her a lot, brought back a sense of nostalgia, love for family, her flawed walls due to her loss, a complex character but a true one whom I really liked.

Dominic, a gem of a character on one side, flawed with insecurities on the other side, made it hard for me to connect with him at few points, definitely became a meh at the end looking at his actions, not that he didn't have valid reasons but his sense of maturity cut me through.

It hurts to say this, but the book kinda got draggy at few bits, and the ending was not satisfactory for me, even though Shay got her ending, which I loved. A good book to read though, but some parts disappointed me.

Next Book - Finishing up on A Bollywood Affair by Sonali Dev, Discover your quest by Dhara Purohit and Winter Garden by Kristen Hannah - lots on my TBR lol.

I enjoy a rom-com from time to time but they can all start to run together for me after a while. After hearing some of my trusted reading sources raving about The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon, I decided to give it a try, and I am so glad I did!

Shay and Dominic are two work rivals who are talked into fabricating a past relationship, in the interest of a new podcast show. Shay had worked for almost a decade at Seattle public radio station when Dominic enters the scene.

After putting in her time, she is ready to finally see all of her hard work pay off but isn't prepared for her arrogant new co-worker whose presence is now helping make this new series a great success. The witty and intelligent banter was spot on and the chemistry between Shay and Dominic is palpable...making this a completely compulsive read.

The Ex Talk has plenty of twists and amazing and realistic characters. I love when real-life issues are a part of more light-hearted plotlines and Solomon nailed this aspect. You can also tell that Solomon knows the into and outs of public radio, and as an NPR junkie, this behind-the-scenes look at all the work that goes into making a show successful was super compelling.

This book was just as much about finding your way in adulthood as it was a romance, and it left me with all the feels. The storyline was perfectly paced, resulting in a very satisfying (and believable!) conclusion...something I always wish for but rarely find in this genre. I know this book will be one of my favorite contemporary romances of 2021 and I highly recommend picking up a copy!
