I desperately wanted to like this book. The Book Thief was so wonderful. Unfortunately this book isn’t as wonderful. I found it disjointed, confusing and hard to follow. Part of it may be that I don’t recall all the details already given very well. But I didn’t find it readable. Got better towards the end and certainly had some moving moments. I enjoyed the characters (once I almost had them figured out) and saw potential in them. But just didn’t get enough of what I hoped for out of this.
DNF. I tried really hard, but after reading half of the book and still not being into it I had to put it down. Such a shame because I absolutely loved the book thief, this however did not do it for me.
A masterpiece! Like some artists Zusak tells his stories as much in the spaces between the words as the words themselves, giving the reader just enough for them to see it unfolding within themselves. The Dunbar boys seemed to love be in my heart and head having escaped the page entirely. Any writer who can do that is some kind of genius. I’ve long been a Zusak fan, but this blew me away more than I was prepared for. Recovery will take some time!
This was a story I needed to read. The Dunbar boys will forever hold a place in my heart
I found it hard to get into the writing style, although once I did I enjoyed it, and the multiple plot lines throughout time just confused me. There was a lot of jumping forward and back through time very unclearly, and it felt at times like the pages had been scrambled. Also, the plot itself was slow moving hazy - I can list about four major events from the (very long) book, but it felt episodic.
This book is not for everyone, for sure. This is a long family saga type story that's also non-linear. These five boys are on their own, the eldest taking care of them all, keeping some of the younger ones out of trouble mostly. His POV is telling us the story of the 4th youngest named Clay and how he helped their father, who abandoned them, build this bridge over an empty riverbed that is expected to flood.
If that premise sounds interesting to you, that's all you need! If you also love Markus Zusak's writing style filled with metaphors and similes, then you will love this!

This has been number one on my to-read shelf for so long, I can't believe I finally finished it. It's a great book, maybe not a "Book Thief," but pretty darn near perfect. There are a lot of boys in this book, but at the center of the story is Penny Dunbar (the mistake maker, the broken-nosed bride, etc.). Can definitely tell that the author loves every single one of these characters and put a lot of time and effort into bringing them to life for his reader.
The book has been ten years in the making...can't wait to see what comes next for Zusak!
