This one would’ve greatly benefited from an editor. I did get the self-published version of this, and the bad formatting was distracting. But I found there were a lot of contradictions, and I disagree with the reasoning behind “knowledge is carnage,” and I don’t really think the book knew the arguments it was making at the time. It wasn’t good enough for me to want to pick up the second book in the series.

This book was well written and I found myself continuing to read it to follow the plot but the rest of it just wasn't for me. I couldn't really bring myself to care about the characters or setting (which was unexpected usually a dark academia/magic institution premise really draws me in).  Mostly everything just felt miserable which, granted, was kind of the point or at least the driving motivation for most of the characters.

tldr: good pacing and prose, but simply wasn't for me.

I really didn’t gel with this book. The characters were quite superficial, there was practically no plot and the writing felt jolted and rough. There was so much potential here. The beginning felt promising, however, it only went downhill from there.
It was The Secret History but without Donna Tartt’s mastery.

Good concept + really good detail and physiological aspects but not enough detailing

i'm so conflicted.

the magic system was very interesting and i enjoyed many of the intricate scientific elements... but it was a pretty slow plot, there wasn't much actually *happening*. i disliked every character and yet their philosophical discussions and physics theories and dialogue was at times stunningly fascinating.. i don't know. i both loved it and hated it .

A lot of reviews say this was too dense. I can agree with that, the writing was a little full of itself. It felt like the author was trying to build the mysterious ambience but after a while it was just mysterious for the sake of mysterious. I also did not feel super attached to any characters. Like their whole hook was these people are flawed but powerful and I Got It. You didn't have to obfuscate so much and create social anxiety over nothing. The characters were mid at best. Writing was hollowly complex and the story had an interesting premise that didn't go anywhere. I'll just wait and watch the mid movie in 3 years.

While I enjoyed this book I did find it quite difficult to read, not because the plot or the storyline or anything but because the writing style was so complex, I found myself having to reread certain sentences numerous times to understand what was being said.

As for the characters, to be honest I didnt quite feel attached to them as I would have liked. I found Libby very annoying and whiny and Callum just down right hateable- which for him I suppose was the point.

All this being said, I did find the story quite intriguing and not something I've seen written about often. Time to start book 2!
