I borrowed this book from the library because I was in the mood for romantic suspense. This is the first Linda Howard book I’ve read in years; and judging by its quality, I will think twice about picking up another one of hers. There was page after page of endless, mindless detail about every thought that went through every character’s mind. She even had the observations of the bear. Yes, you read that right..the bear. The chapter’s felt long and drawn out. It also takes nearly 1/2 the book to get to the point.

3.5 stars. Good characters and a swiftly moving plot held my interest. Howard has a good writing style that I always appreciate. The first snippet from the bear's POV was very strange - I liked it better when she merely described his actions instead of trying to be inside of his head.

2 hours into audio and nothings happened. snore! the heroine has put her house up for sale and yelled at the hero. that's about it! just 2 hours of setup, cheesy backstory (personal details about the 2 main characters backgrounds, cheesy sentimental shit which makes you say "who cares??" after several minutes and scream "get to the story!!!", blah blah blah. also, you can tell by every "setup detail" exactly what's going to happen in the story, because the author is so blatantly covering all her bases for later events (like emphasizing how the heroine has made sure to pack the large size canisters of bear spray before her hunt in the woods, and mentioning that she didn't have the money for a satellite phone ever since her father died - oh darn do you think she might need one later in chapter whatever when the bear attacks her???, that she's giving away too much of what's going to happen! duh!!! the most exciting part so far was a hiker who got eaten by a bear in the woods. that part was written very well.
should i go on? sure - there's too much to be learned from crap writing!

The author draws out each scene way way too long. Like she's just trying to extend her word count. Also the chapters from the point of view of them that he I are throwaways. From the point of view of the bad guy those chapters were boring and I think should've been throwaways. I could have done without the scene from the bear's POV, yes, really. Although the bear was more interesting than the bad guy.
The part where he saves her carries her out of the forest in the middle of a thunderstorm that was written very well I enjoyed that. That's the kind of seeing you want to have that makes her hero look really good. That sets up the kind of tension that's awesome.
There is way too much inner dialogue. There should just be more action. Or just make it a shorter book.

The author repeats so many things too. The Hero will relate an event to the heroine that we already know about, so we have to listen to it twice - it's tedious and something to avoid as a writer.

Well I saw what was coming plot-wise, so, skimmed through the big climax at the end, the bear/villain attack in the woods, because, who cares.
Oh dear it ends with a marriage.

This was RIGHT UP MY ALLEY. I'm a sucker for a survival story AND for a steamy romance, so any book that successfully blends those genres makes me very happy indeed. Plus, this had some of my favorite fanfic tropes: huddling for warmth, being secluded/trapped due to weather, and -- my favorite -- supposedly platonic bed sharing. (Side note, I think all romance novels should be required to feature AO3-esque tags on the book jacket.)

There's nothing particularly sophisticated or clever about the writing, but if you're looking for a page-turner with a hearty dose of sexual tension and romance, this is a really fun read.

Two adversaries find themselves working together in order to survive both the extreme weather, a killer, man-eater black bear and a ruthless, calculating murderer determined to get rid of the witness of his crime.

Angie and Dare's simmering attraction that's been suppressed for years, becomes impossible to ignore when they're trapped in very close proximity and dependent on one another for their survival, and finally brings them together.

Intense story with a hard earned, much deserved happy ending.

I liked this right up until the end. The ending of the conflict just happened and then it seemed as if it was realized how many pages had been written and then abruptly crammed a happy ending in.

I really feel like the fact that there are pages of this books written from a BEAR'S POV is not talked about nearly enough. I was so confused and surprised to be reading a bear's thoughts that I went on goodreads to see if anyone else mentioned it, because I couldn't quite believe what I was reading. But, yes, it had been acknowledged, and parts of this book contain a bear's POV. A black bear, if that's something you'd like to know upfront.

I enjoyed the actual story and the characters. It wasn't the most amazing book I've read, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed that these were logical, practical people with experience in the outdoors - you never felt like yelling at a character for making a dumb choice, because they were making pretty good choices (probably better than me, as I am not outdoorsy at all).

Overall, this is probably closer to a 2.5 stars, but the bear's pov will make it hard to forget.

I ended up skimming, because the parts where the characters were "thinking" seemed repetitive. How many pages were devoted to how the villain was not really stupid/plain/nerdy accountant.

Meh. The "thrill" wasn't very thrilling and the "romance" wasn't all that romantic. Plus, at several points throughout the book, we were in the POV of the man-eating bear. The BEAR. The villain was extremely uninteresting and the relationship developed so quickly that I didn't buy the I love yous for a minute. Overall, this one let me down. I've enjoyed the other Howard novels I've read in the past, but this one was solidly mediocre.

2 1/2 stars, but I'm rounding up.
