So much grief. It was not a lie about how much propaganda was going to be in this book.

DEFINITE recommend
This is, hopefully, the final prequel and book in The Hunger Games series. I think that it was wrapped up nicely and with a satisfying ending.
Yes, this was written for young adults so the writing is not literature, but it was fast-paced and attention-getting. We finally understand WHY Haymitch Abernathy is who he is (including his innermost thoughts). This book dovetails nicely into the series with good character development and character arc.
This is Haymitch's Hunger Games, the 50th Hunger Games, and the 2nd Quarter Quell. Oh, and the reaping in on Haymitch's birthday. Yep, it is a huge set-up for a wild ride, so make sure you are seatbelted!
The narration is fantastic. I highly recommend the audiobook which I checked out from the library.

Ok, wow. Although I was very excited to be able to read this, as I received it from the library only a day after release, this blew my expectations away. The plot was intense, and very creative. It has some darker themes and is a bit scarier than the original trilogy, and kept me on the edge of my seat. A few recurring characters and old plot devices, but I thought that they were seamed in well. Painful character development that is really well written, with a satisfying ending that leads to the trilogy perfectly. I think it could have been written more appropriately for the younger audience it is marketed to, even if Haymitch is narrating. Could use a round of edits for wordy sentences as well. But overall, such an achy, soulful, tragic, prequel for a fantastic character.
