For my library reading challenge I had to read at least one book set in the 19th century, and chose to pick up Wuthering Heights one more time after 30 years, and my perspective could not have changed more. I remember kind of liking it as an adolescent, but from the feminist point of view of a 42 year old woman living in the 21st century, it is a disaster unfolding in front of my eyes. Heathcliff is such a selfish, detestable and misogynistic character! The whole novel is basically people being horrible to each other and driving each other to ruin.
But then again, I was never one to fall for the "toxic bad boy"
But then again, I was never one to fall for the "toxic bad boy"
The contempt for "the ideal" social class, and gender inequality is prevalent in this book as Emily Bronte challenges the social norm for the late 1800s.
Wuthering Heights, is the kind of book you can read over and over again and appreciate something new every time. When I read this book in my teens I desperately hated Heathcliff. Reading it as an adult I only felt sorry for him.
It is an easy book to hate, the characters are frustrating and horrible people, but understanding why Heathcliff is such a monster will allow you to appreciate him for what he is. He is the perfect candidate for the Nature vs. Nurture debate. A poor orphan taken in only to be met with cruelty, unrequited love and manual labor. It is no surprise that as an adult his bravado fills the room while he uses excessive cruelty as a personal reminder of his own greatness.
Its a beautiful story of incredibly flawed people.
If you can appreciate that then you will appreciate this book.

I just don't know what to make of this book. Will need to do some research to better understand why it's considered a classic.
Is it a Romance? No.
Is it a mystery? No.
Psycho thriller? No.
It's just... A story of how the abuse experienced by one person, then impacts everyone else around him for generations. With a little racism and classism thrown in for what reason idk. 🤷🏽♀️ Wouldn't Hareton's hatred of Heathcliff being based off his father's favoritism be enough? And Heathcloff's subsequent bad character be enough for the town and everyone else to judge him?

I don’t think this or Jane Eyre compare to Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I said what I said. However, I do and not proudly think that the reason I feel this way is because I don’t majorly love any of the characters in either? I don’t fancy heathcliff or mr rochester, I think The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is so underrated in comparison.
