I really love how this series is both beautiful and brutal, and the world building is so good.

So pretty, violent, heart-filled without being corny. The continuing story lost nothing by it being the third volume.

“What happened once will happen again…but in a different form. To become a future-teller one only needs to study history.”
Another riveting volume in this continually surprising series. Maika’s pursuers have located her on the refugee island of Pontus and she and her crew must work to protect its inhabitants.
This one was slightly less focused as Vol 3 and introduced some elements that felt a little less original than it has been in the past, but on the whole, it’s still complex, brilliant, and exciting. One quite emotional moment shows how much the relationships have developed in just three volumes.

SO MANY THINGS TO LOVE
1) Truly is there any other comic with art that is comparable to Monstress. It's so luscious, it's MADLY detailed, it's so gorgeous even when horrendously gory things are happening
2) This volume, even more than volume 2, feels like it has a really complete & contained arc set around a single city and event, which makes the stakes stay high and memorable, and the secrets and revelations are well-paced. It's also still moving the overall plot and world forward, and the game keeps building. It's DELICIOUS.
4) The evolution of the relationships and the expression of them (EVERYBODY LOVES KIPPA, but also Maika & Zinn, Zinn & others, lots more) is so good! So much feeling!
5) The balancing of the (dark) humor & the plot & the feelings (characters to each other, especially the TIGER DADS i missed them) is so deftly done
6) The "mothers" scene is amazing. Felt like getting a glimpse at the heart of the story.
7) I also quite like the way we briefly entered Maika's dreams, which are full of body horror and emotions expressed as images and terrible conversations, and then some of the visuals she dreams are introduced into the real world of the plot seamlessly (I think! The chest-eye looking Real being the main thing I noticed)

The cryptic saga continues in Monstress Vol. 3. I read this in one sitting but I slightly regret doing so and may place this volume on my re-read list.
This particular volume focuses heavily on the Old Gods, which as we've learned from previous volumes is what the entity that lives within Maika and his name is Zinn. Zinn betrayed the Shaman Empress, of which Maika is believed to be connected to and much of the plot focuses on this lore. As a reader, you somewhat expect to get more information on what is starting to unfold but you're often left with more questions as some aspects of the lore and plot are quite cryptic.
Further, the Cumea and the Dusk Court are both out looking for Maika because of her connections with the Old Gods, and an impending war between the two sides looms again. Maika and Kippa find themselves in a city called Pontus, in which we learn that the city managed to stay safe during the last war due to a piece of armour that shielded the city. Unfortunately, it is broken and knowing that a war is likely to occur soon, Maika gets recruited by the city to help repair it. Kippa leaves and goes her own way shortly after this occurrence leaving Maika wondering about her connections to the people around her and how she has lived in survival mode for so long. Maika also comes to learn that she is not the only one with an Old God inside of her...
There is a lot to take in with this volume, it's almost overwhelming, even more so than the first two volumes. However, it's hard to complain when the artwork is so stunning and details such a visceral picture. Even though the lore is expansive in this volume, as a reader you start to really piece all the histories together to get a firmer grasp on this story and setting. I am looking forward to what awaits in the next volume.
