This series is an interesting political fantasy featuring anthropomorphic animal characters who use magic to summon a legendary champion unlike anything they’ve seen before. It’s sort of like Redwall meets Game of Thrones, though not as complex as Game of Thrones.

Artwork has a historic, kind of dirty look to it that works with the feel of the story.

I didn’t get as attached to the characters as I’d have liked, but a bull terrier protagonist scores points with me. It’s a decent read, set in a world that has potential, but I’m not sure I care enough about the characters to read past this point.

Graphic Novel Book Club Aug 2016:

I'm torn between a 3.5 and 4. I really liked this book more than I expected to, even though I was in the smaller minority of the grand group discussion this time. I am curious about the olden times to present times shift, and very much about our only 3 panel hint at that world. I love the different animals and the inside jokes therein, also the differences between the magic and science, the animals and the man.

This will stay on my list as something to maybe read more of in the coming days.

I REALLY want to see where this series goes. This first volume served as a good introduction to its fantasy setting and it’s story. The art, character designs, lore, and the world are easily its strongest aspects so far. The characters take a bit to start developing, but I think they find their footing in the 2nd half. That, along with some of the dialogue, can make parts of the 1st half feel slow. It’s a lot of fun throughout though and, as a furry, I’m a really big fan of different stories with anthropomorphic animals. They always have such unique worlds and character designs. This one was no exception. It has so many diverse species, from bull terriers to parrots, all with their own unique looks.

Kind of fun. There is something fascinating about people with animal heads and features. It must be deep in our psyche somewhere. I was reading about the Löwenmensch figurine and it seems like this has fascinated us for almost as long as we have been human.

The art is good, but a little contorted in a few panels. The story was good as well, but some of the characters lack depth, particularly the human champion who shows up swinging his sword and working hard to save an ungrateful menagerie of beast headed people without much apparent incentive to risk his own life doing so.

I'll probably read vol 2. This was a comixology find during my free trial. I'm underwhelmed by the service and haven't found anything yet that would induce me to keep the subscription.

This was... fine? Not my kind of graphic novel, but not bad.

Bullet Review:

3...or 4? It's a decent read, if predictable. I am curious what happens next.

3.5?

Damn this Champion is a royal a-hole!

'The Autumnlands, Vol. 1: Tooth and Claw' written by Kurt Busiek and art by Benjamin Dewey is a strange new fantasy series, but I quite liked it.

The setting is a floating city in the Autumnlands, with an anthropomorphic population of all kinds of species. When they decide to bring forward a legendary hero by using magic, it has catastrophic results. The hero they get is also not quite what they were expecting. Between new threats to them, there is also infighting amongst the leaders, and the new hero proves to be more mysterious and violent than they thought possible.

The story is good, but I found it a bit predictable. The reason to check this out is for the art, which is pretty amazing. I liked the characters, from the stodgy and stuck city leaders, to the crafty trader, to the cynical, smart-mouthed hero. This graphic novel is the first 5 issues and it's a pretty complete story, so I'm interested to see where the series goes from here. Not too bad at all.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Image Comics, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
