I actually thought that this was a very useful book. It explain that history of Shadowhunters, Idris, Silent Brothers, and Iron Sisters way more thoroughly. I'm glad that this is a separate book from the series because if it had been in one of the other books, I would have been very bored.
I also really like the little revisions that Jace, Clary, and Simon did. I think that it kind of breaks up the monotony of the longer passages.

Most of the information in the codex are things we have discovered through reading the book series'. And yet I still kept reading because of the comments and the few interesting sections. It did get boring at times and was deliberately high handed both because it reads like a manual and because of the I'm-better-than-you attitude of the clave. Had to read it though to complete my collection.
If you haven't read the first three books in The Mortal Instruments, you shouldn't read this one since it contains some spoilers.
Since I love both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices (and the Shadow World in general), I had to get this book as well and I love it so, so much.
Design: I absolutely love the design of the book. The dust jacket with Raziel on the cover looks really great and I also love the shiny look and the gold lettering. (I have the standard version, by the way, not the special edition.) I also love how the book looks under the dust jacket. It has a really nice shade of blue and the golden Mortal Cup on the cover. Inside the book, there's not only text but also drawings by Clary and notes by Clary, Jace and Simon which give the book a personal touch (you get the feeling that it really belonged to Clary and she passed it on to you). I especially loved the portrait drawings of the TMI characters at the end of the book.
Content: The Shadow World is my favourite book world and this book gives a detailed insight into the many different aspects of the Shadow World, such as Demons, Downworlders, weapons, etc. The book has a very clear structure so that you can also use it like an encyclopedia and look up certain parts. But reading it from the beginning to the end (like I did it) works just fine as well. :)
The content is very varied including sections about Shadowhunter history and also useful (if you ever meet a demon :p) stuff like "How to report a demon".
The most entertaining parts of the book are the notes by Clary, Jace and Simon which are really funny.

The ebook read didn't have a distinction between who was writing what, however, it was pretty easy to figure it out. I found this pretty interesting but it was also kind of boring in some areas. I appreciate the map of Idris though. I love maps.

A comprehensive look into the mythology of the Shadowhunter world. As is par with these types of fictional textbooks, it was dry, but overall had some decent parts and painted a pretty total picture of the background of the world.
The artwork and drawings were nice as well.
Not necessary reading for the series, but for a fan may help feather out the finer details.

I really enjoyed reading the codex!
Usually, I don't write reviews of CC's books because I believe that I may be subjective.
However, I really liked reading the codex, because it was only informative, but also kinda casual and funny with all these notes from Clary, Jace and Simon!
200 pages flew like air.. it was an evening well- spent
