It was so hard to read this thing! The main character, Janie (name which bothers me to no end), has an internal dialogue the the size of Jupiter and the selfsteem the size of an ant... Reading this book felt like walking in waist-high mud, hard and tiring.
I hated that the end is abrupt, and it seems like the author just got tired of one part of the story line because at the end "everything was taken care of" with zero details, which is weird because there is tons and tons of details about unimportant things such as toilet paper rolls...
This books gets two stars because I liked the idea of a guy that loves the freaky issues this woman has, I like that kind of love and acceptance.

Omg this was just what I needed. After living through a hurricane (Harvey) then a horrendous downpour for 4 days, 52" of water and city devastation I needed some mental relief. Penny Reid was my choice and I picked well. Her characters are always completely engaging, the story always fun with a touch of wacky, and her snark is perfection. This one was wonderful, my heart smiled for the first time in a week.
Quinn, the quirky, super focused guy with serious relationship issues. Janie, is the overthinking, analyzing, socially awkward brainiac with relationship issues. Together, they make an uncomfortable near match, back and forth, it's almost sad except it's really just too funny to watch them stumble. It's a romance, you know what happens I don't need to say more.
I love Penny Reid's writing.

Neanderthal Seeks Human is the second book I read by Penny Reid. I like the author's writing and the relationship she builds with her characters.
Both Jaine & Quinn have dysfunctional families, but Janie has a good circle of friends that she can rely on.
Janie isn't your typical heroine, and she's weird but endearingly. She had her share of quirks, always rambling about some little-known and often irrelevant fact.
Quinn is just full of surprises. The romance was slow to build but oh so sweet.

I read Penny Reid's Winston Brothers series first and then circled back to this book; I can definitely see the growth she made after writing this.  I found Janie to be very frustrating and annoying as a protagonist.  I didn't mind her inability to shut down her verbal diarrhea when she gets flustered, but what I did mind was her propensity for literally running away from conversations and refusing to tell Quinn what was going on, while berating the lack of communication trope common to romance novels.  Finally, finally, she breaks down and tells Quinn that she's afraid and that's why she reacts the way she does, but it happens way later in the book than it should and it made me want to throttle her.

Sad sad sad to say that I couldn’t do it. I love the Winston boys and thought I’d try out the original series in Reid’s universe, but oof I just could NOT with Quinn as a hero.

Janie was a bit of a silly bean, very quirky, but at least she wasn’t over the top Not Like Other Girls, always talking positively about other women, but that often came with negative comments about herself, that were really grating. The amount of negative attention paid to her body was ridiculous, but also indicative of when this was written. It was also frustrating just how unaware she could be. There’s a moment where she decides no one needs to babysit or take care of her, she’s an adult woman and can do it herself, dammit! Except she promptly stumbles into a bad situation and needs rescuing.

Quinn does a lot of the same stuff mentioned when Janie’s complaining about her ex-boyfriend which was ridiculous to me. Quinn’s too over the top strong, silent type, purposefully misleading Janie a few times (which played on the over the top unawareness she exhibits), but when things started to push the line into sexual harassment territory because of their power imbalance, I was out. It just felt too icky and I couldn’t see myself looking at him positively after that.
