I think this will be the top of my confusing-reads this year.
The story doesn’t really get told to you but you find out little by little, and I do mean little. I assumed from the tags on Goodreads, that Fae are involved which made the randomly going-into-heat part a bit less.. weird.
However strange this book is, I don’t quite agree with certain reviews. Rhordyn, the one who saved Orlaith pushes her into society and wants her to live a life. He wants her to go past her ‘safety line’ and leave her tower (except on 2 occasions where he actually locks her up for in his eyes 'good intentions').
Orlaith is clearly traumatised from her past, the unknown and uncertainty and struggles dealing with her emotions. Yet she is very mischievous and curious, and these character-traits are her main driving force.
I’m not sure what exactly I read, or where the story is going. Hopefully book 2 clears up my confusion.

The slow burn of this is so worth it. Have I been left with loads of questions yes, but the journey through the book and complex character growth was brilliant. Orlaith's journey was frustrating at times but for good reason and the way her trauma was presented was brilliant. The bits and pieces of information gathered as you go just intrigued me, more and more. I am excited for the next book!
Love and Hate
I both loved and hated this book. On the one hand it was beautifully written. The author weaves the story together almost like a poem. She describes things with similes and metaphors that make ordinary situations sound artistic. But sometimes the author’s lengthy descriptions got in the way. I found myself annoyed because it felt like the story dragged and was weighed down by the flowery language.
I loved and hated the characters. The FMC was so immature. Her actions were frustrating most of the book. She is obsessed with the MMC, who doesn’t have a lot of redeeming qualities. However, I found myself intrigued by their relationship and I kept reading to see how their relationship would progress. This book leaves a lot more questions than answers. After finishing the book, I’m not really sure what’s going on. I’m not sure if I’ll read the next book…

I'm not sure what happened. The author was amazingly talented at writing, but the content got uncomfortably dark real fast. There was self mutilation , and I just couldn't enjoy it once that happened repeatedly. You can write dark fantasy with gothic undertones without needing to bring that up. I don't know if the author planned on pulling a SJM with the anti-hero, but I just disliked him too much to continue.
I did NOT find this book appealing at all sadly. At first I thought it would be good but then she's locked up and obviously dealing with the fallout of the massacre she witnessed when she was little. No one there to kind of help her through it really. It also goes reallllyyyyyy slow, painful at times. Her rescuer/savior basically has her on a drip for her blood. Orlaith, our MFC, was nice and sweet but quite annoying. I tried to sympathize with her because she's been locked in a tower with little guidance on how to be a good human in the world and life, etc. I felt like she really never developed much as a character. Maybe she will in the second book, but I won't pick up the second one and I hate that because I hate not knowing what is happening.
Pivoting on to her savior, Rhor our MMC, ummmm he's way too old for her and he didn't really help her, he was just using her. He's just not worth a dime. I really disliked his character and what he did with Orlaith. I don't know it felt icky to me that they met when she was 2 years old and I have zero issues with age gaps but this was too much for me. I'd have thought he would be more big brother or father figure not romantic interest. Ew. Just didn't do it for me. Some may like it but I just couldn't get into it and the ick factor was too much for me to enjoy and it definitely has prevented me from wanting to read the next one. I wanted to like this one I really did, I just couldn't do it.
Spice: 3/5
Plot:2/5
Character Dev: 2/5
Overall: 2/5

I want to start off my saying that when I started this book, I almost DNF. However I pushed through and I am SO GLAD that I did!
This book ticks almost all my boxes - fantasy, gore, mystery, spice, and the unexpected. I would be lying if I said the MFC didn't annoy the absolute h*ll out of me at times, but that plays a part in her character development through the second book so after reading #2, I've forgiven her for her moments of intense immaturity.
This author is the queen of tease LOL the spice in this book is unreal, while at the same time... nothing really ever happens. Its always thisclose to culminating, which helps to build the tension between the characters to a flaming pitch.
This is a book that is either a 'yes I've read it' or 'haven't heard of it'. Now that I have read it, I have recommended it to as many people was I can because to not read this book is a loss. Do yourself a favour and read it, and have the second one ready to go for the second you finish! You can thank me later.
