Whoa...this was...awful? Maybe it's the collection itself I have a problem with it. You get a 1 shot, then 2 cross over issues, and then the end reverts back to the X-Men for just a few moments mostly to out a character. That's it...
The big "controversy" here is Iceman coming out that he's gay. The scene is kind of cute, and Jean Grey being kind of catty and bitchy helps. Iceman even says "How's that possible? Bobby in the future isn't gay" but Jean goes 'Really? You sure? All his relationships suck" and you know what, these X-Men aren't the same as their future self. For example, I hate old jean, but I love this Jean. So there you go.
What I liked: Just the moments with Iceman and Jean. That's really about it. Also Jean is hot. Yep.
What I didn't like: The one shot was boring as hell. Training mission that leads nowhere. The vortex crossover event was fucking confusing and who gives a shit? I'd have to read this whole event to care. Also after Bobby comes out a new villain comes but who really cares at this point? Waste.
Overall this was a huge letdown. I liked almost all the volumes except 1 or 2, but this is a AWFUL collection. SKippppppp.

Well this makes me contradict just about EVERYTHING I said about the X-Men in The Black Vortex crossover. So here are really only 3 issues here that stand alone. The other 2 are from the middle of the crossover and don't really flow on their own (but at least they fit back to back in the crossover). I'll ignore those two for the sake of this review since that arc was reviewed separately (spoiler: it SUUUUUUCKS). Minor actual spoiler below in the third paragraph.
The first issue is focused on Emma and Jean. Anything furthering their relationship and training so far has been fun. I'm enjoying seeing Jean get out in her place and also Emma actually in her element mentoring someone again. Though I still REALLY want Jean to stop reading everyone's minds without a reason to, but more on that later.
The next issue is after they all get back from space. There are some nice little character bonding moments, etc., and a lead in to the Utopians story. POSSIBLE SPOILER: This is also when the now infamous scene with Bobby and Jean happens. I have mixed feelings about it. I love having a new gay character, a major character, in a comic that I love. On the other hand, it's the exact type of invasive telepathy that bothers me to no end about Jean. It cheapens the information because it wasn't presented openly and honestly. There wasn't the pride aspect of it. At least not yet. There's still the big official coming out and maybe that will be more satisfying. Who knows. Another sidebar on this issue: Angel actually presents an awesome reason for his actions in Black Vortex (if only the crossover had time to just mention that instead of glossing over it), but I do wish someone will call him on the similarities with Archangel's story. And completely random, apparently in his new costume, Angel can only be drawn well from the side?
The last issue is a lot of fun. It addresses the Utopians title. I don't want to spoil anything from that plot, but there are some unanswered questions that you may not have even thought to ask that get answered. It's kind of exciting. I also really like the interactions with Maria Hill and some of their political undertones.
The art is mixed. I still love Asrar's work and Del Mundo does OK for his issue. It definitely sets it apart as a one-off story, but I think the backgrounds got too cluttered. Overall, really well presented, though.
Still enjoying this group of X-Men!

The three issues that aren't part of the Black Vortex event are fine.
The two that are part of the Black Vortex event successfully convinced me I don't care if I ever read the Black Vortex event.

It's really annoying that all of the Black Vortex issues are being released both in the Black Vortex collection and also in their separate series collections. There is no point in even trying to read these issues seperate from the other chapters of the event. Realistically, they're only included because the final collection would only have the 2 non-event issues. Sadly those issues aren't great either. Once again, they're forced to set up and wrap up a new arc quickly before Secret Wars takes over. And there is a pretty big bomb dropped about an original X-Man which would have more resonance if the series didn't apparently end right away, leaving another writer (presumably) to decide whether to do anything with that plot thread post-Secret Wars (assuming it doesn't just get retconned out of existence immediately). Disappointing end to this

I think I'm out. This series has gotten so far from it's premise that I don't even know what I'm reading anymore. I need to find another X-Men run to follow.

I was annoyed to find out that there was a whole crossover event that interrupted this volume. Otherwise, it’s a fine ending to this iteration of the All-New X-Men series.

Did someone say this was the end of the run? What? Not a conclusion! Also, the Black Vortex thing sucks, stop including it in stuff. I still like the characters-morally questionable Jean is the best Jean--but it all needs some direction, not crossover.

There's not a lot to this volume. Five somewhat related issues that show the sereis petering out. The art is varied, but strong, but the stories are all over the place, from the Jean Grey training issue to the Black Vortex crossover issue to Jean Grey outs Iceman to himself to The All New X-Men sort of rescue a bunch of mutants that writers seem to have left behind on Utopa. It's mostly an uninspiring treading of water before the series relaunches.
I recommend it for completists and for people who enjoy the queering of a character for no reason or stakes (though this will be an interesting development in future issues). I'm not putting it in my LGBTQ+ category because the queerness affects nothing in the story and is, in this volume, completely arbitrary.

Well, the only reason to read this is to enjoy Bendis' take on Bobby and Jean. Everything else is subpar. You start with Michael Del Mundo's art, which just doesn't fit an X-book. Then, some non-consecutive parts of a bad crossover. Finally we get to the Utopians story which is meh. Seriously, not much happened. Asrar's art is fun and fitting. Overall, not enough to like.

It's really hard to rate a book so inconsistent. The first part's art was just so off, then we got a two-parter that tied into a different story arc that wasn't that interesting and which ending we didn't even got to see (the Vortex crossover). And then finally, a 2-parter that was actually about the X-Men, and it was really good.
I have mixed thoughts about this, but at least the ending was nice, real nice.
