Munro is such a talented writer, I love the way she describes the characters. The growth of a girl through the pubertal years is also beautifully described, not too many words, only the essential. There was something very universal in the text although the story takes place is a small Canadian village in 1940's. I couldn't help reading this as an autobiographical book though it is mentioned to be fiction, because Del and the other characters came so close to you.

wow. I'm floored. Amazing amazing. so disjointed in time yet moves so fluidly. watching all her loved ones grow up was so fulfilling. An absolutely satisfying read. I laughed out loud at, "sounds like Brave New World." "I don't know what that is. I don't read fiction." and then immediately started sobbing when she didn't get her scholarship. Her desire for love and her desire for life and knowing that she had to choose this because of her wise mother. The insanely beautiful writing inspired me so much. I haven't felt so connected to a story since I went on my Shirley Jackson binge.

I haven’t read this since the 12th grade. It was amazing to read again over 20+ years later. I had some vague recollections of the story, and some very vivid recollection of odds and ends throughout. I found myself identifying more with the mother this time, but darn of I don’t still feel Del through and through just like I did at 17. Life affirming and satisfying... will read again.
Just wasn’t my cup of tea. Too slow moving and I was very confused when and who the narrator was referencing or talking about or at what age the narrator was during certain times. I wouldn’t recommend this book to people.
I forgot how much this book brings me back to a part of myself. Girlhood. Refusals. Acceptances. The Wawanash river and the drowned women as other ways out. The Library. Returns and homecomings to roads, houses, towns, childhood friends. Fern, Miss Farris, and the sides of houses.
