Oh, what a mess did Harper make...

description

hmmm... not my favorite. I probably wouldn't recommend this, it's not only a little grating, but wholly unbelievable. the only good part was the big event in the middle, and it was also my least favorite part, so, that should tell you something

This book is bad and you should feel bad.

In a span of 33 e-book pages, the heroine left her home without batting an eyelash, met her roommate without being properly introduced and became best friends within 5 minutes, went to her first party looking like a slut, and typically slept beside a "hot" guy that she knew for like, 4 hours?

Now THAT escalated quickly.

This book is like a bad sitcom script. Or a really bad fanfic.

"Gah, why did he have to be so hot?" This girl is lacking personality and depth. Where the fuck did publishers find this book?! Out of Molly McAdam's ass?

*UPDATE*

Okay, I have to admit that after the first few shallow parts of the book, it wasn't entirely that bad. I give it props for making me cry over the span of the last few chapters, and asides from a few stupid chapters which I felt weren't important, it was pretty decent to read.

So yes, I would like to thank the author for making Harper pregnant thus being the turning point of the book, enough for it to deserve 2 stars. Would've made it 3 if not for making me so mad at first.

This book didn't work for me AT ALL. The book Boyfriend Series by Erin Noelle did a much better job with a storyline similar to this one. However, I'm not going to compare the two.

In regards to Taking Chances, I think if it were broken into 2 separate unrelated books they would have been right up my alley. Take the first half of the book; leave everything the same except instead of Chase leaving and getting in an accident. He fights for their relationship. Maybe while he's fighting and earning Harper's trust she realizes she loves Brandon but isn't in love with Brandon like she is Chase, and Chase finally gets his girl and HEA. Or hell, leave the accident. He could be in a coma, Trish shows up confesses to drugging him, which causes Harper to freak out and so Brandon goes in to "talk" to Chase. Tells him Harper needs him, the baby needs him etc and maybe Brandon realizes he's not IN love with Harper and tells Chase he does deserve her. Chase wakes up....HEA. And while he's there, Brandon meets a cute nurse and bam! Brandon gets his own book and love story........ See that would be a great book/series.

Now if the plot for the second half was just a separate book about a girl who lost the guy she loved and was going to have a baby with, and ended up finding a second chance at love... That would be a great book too. She could even already know the guy she ends up with but b/c she lost someone she loves, she's hesitant to give her heart away again and he is super sweet and fights to show her it's ok to love again etc.

Separately they would be great books but together it didn't work for me. I didn't like how obviously Harper was in love with Chase but instead of paying attention she assumed she knew what he was doing and what kind of girl he wanted. Like seriously you're aware of when he enters the room but you didn't notice he wasn't drinking or paying any attention to the girls around him? I wasn't ok with how quickly everyone moved on from Chase's death. I was not ok with Harper naming Chase's son after Brandon's dad. I was not ok with Liam calling him Uncle Chase. So for me it really didn't work.

It's been a while since I read this book so apologies for a stale review. The overriding memory of how I felt reading this book was...wtf.

Ignoring how super fast this story progresses and how unrealistic the characters actions/reactions are, the plot has promise. What it's lacking is believability. Harper us apparently the most perfect girl to ever walk the planet with every person, man or woman, falling at her feet, and yet where is the evidence of this? There is little to decipher her character. I automatically get a nasty taste in my mouth when the lead female is "perfect."

And the big hoorah? It was more kerplunk. It was pointless and a cop out to the love triangle. It only worked to make me hate harper more and for thinking that anyone who fell for her was a complete and utter sap.

On a final note. A public service announcement to all authors. TEENAGE PREGNANCIES ARE NOT ROMANTIC, SEXY, OR AN ORIGINALLY INTERESTING IDEA.

Nope

I really really wanted to like this book but there were so many things that irked me. I cannot abide weak flighty young women generally but it didn't make sense to me that someone who was raised by all these marines would be so brainless. It wasn't realistic in the least.

Wow. Just wow. This book actually gave me my first "clutch my pearls" moment. I turned a page and was caught so far off guard with what I read that I literally gasped and clutched!! This book was intense and unfolded so consistently throughout, from beginning to end I was captivated! YA categorization doesn't do it justice!! It's a must read, but prepare yourself for the emotional aftermath!

This was my second time reading, I read it a year ago and have thought of it a million times since. I still think the storyline is intense and if I wasn’t physically reading it, I was thinking about it so I like that it does that. That alone has helped me get out of my month long reading slump. The writing is worse and a little more juvenile than I remember and that made it harder to get through. I still liked it but I think it’s more 3 stars for me than the original 4 I gave it.
