I adored this book-- especially London and Dahlia and their individual growth, as well as how they navigated their relationship together! It was messy and lovely and real. The family dynamics on both sides were so real, as well. I'm grateful for the way it all wrapped up at the end-- not just conveniently with a bow, but still with hope for positive outcomes (like with London and their dad still figuring things out but with London being firm in standing up for themselves, that was super empowering!).
The cooking show aspect was fun, too (though not the bigoted fellow contestants and the interaction between Janet and Dahlia oof). I enjoyed looking up the different dishes they made and it made me hungry every time haha!
Overall, 11/10 would highly recommend!

Dahlia is looking for a new start.
London wants to make a difference.
When these two contestants meet on a cooking show, things get interesting. Sparks fly and the kitchen gets hot as these two very different people connect in the most unusual of circumstances.
I have discovered I have a thing for books based on reality television. I don’t even watch reality television anymore but give me a book based on it and I’ll eat it up. I love the drama and high-stakes and this book brought both of those things. I knew I had to read it when I saw that it was a romance between a queer woman and a pansexual non-binary person that takes place on a cooking show. I loved both main characters, Dahlia and London. I may actually have a huge crush on London. They are absolutely adorable.
This book has plenty of cute moments and its share of steamy ones too. I didn’t find that the spice overtook the story however. There were a couple scenes that had me like… umm. But for the most part, I really enjoyed this book. I loved the representation and I want to see more of it! I will definitely be reading more from this author.

meh …. i was so excited by the premise of a cooking competition au but i got bored a bunch of times while reading and could have left it unfinished at any point. pacing was slow and i think i would have liked more cooking show content lol. there was also this undertone of millennial girlboss energy which even romances that are set in the context of jobs can avoid so i don’t like that those vibes kept popping up in this book.

cute but i’m not really sure what the relationship was other than sex and them both enjoying cooking. kind of a boring couple, which i was not expecting from the author. love the inclusivity though and having a latina lead is always gonna pull me in. resolution to the third act breakup was pretty cute.

for the amount of interesting plots this book could have developed, everything felt underdeveloped & rushed. what happened to the love interests communicating?

I considered DNF’ing this a few times, and I kind of wish I had 😬
I felt so disconnected from the MC’s, and I swear I’ve seen more chemistry between oil and water. The dialogue felt stilted and clunky.I didn’t understand their attraction, and I wasn’t buying into their insta-love. The drama of the third-act breakup felt weak.
Now, it wasn’t all bad. I did love seeing non-binary rep in one of the love interests (especially since learning the author themself is NB), and I loved the exploration of the concepts of gender identity and gender expression. I also loved the glimpses, however brief, of the messy family dynamics the leads were dealing with. It felt natural, and was one of the facets of their personalities I found most relatable.
I see the general appeal, but it wasn’t for me.
