Not as good as the first book in my opinion, but not bad.

Way weaker than the first book, still going to read the conclusion of the series.

It had too much unnecessary drama and breakups and new hookups for my liking. Seriously, the only characters that haven't hooked up are Bee and Harper. Not that I would mind, they are both more developed than Ryan(he is so boring as a character to me).

Also, this book lacked the humor of the first one which is very unfortunate.

A sentence to describe this book: Quite a downgrade but still bearable.

Well... That was fucking shit.

I HATED this book. It was just awful. Teenage angst was the only thing that fuelled this book, and I HATE unresolved romances, SO FUCKING MUCH. It was underdeveloped, nothing made sense, the romantic "tension" pissed me off and Rachel Hawkins should have made Rebel Belle a stand alone.

Okay stuff I liked:
• Harper doing badass Paladin moves with a baton
• David and Harper

Stuff I didn't like:
• Bee and Ryan
• Bee in general, she's fucking annoying
• Ryan in general
• Oh look David left that's it. Uh oh, well at least everything is solved now. NO. FUCK THAT. NO. BRING DAVID BACK OR HIM AND HARPER SHOULD HAVE LEFT TOGETHER.

Basically it sucked and I'm pretending Rebel Belle was a stand alone.

(It took 1hr 16mins to read)

Harper, a Southern Belle, is back. This time she is learning more about her new role as a Paladin or at least what it takes to become ‘official’. Even though that part is not clear to her as she must undergo a series of trials, she quickly learns that the Ephors are back and are wanting to train David. Throughout the book is an adventure of balancing life outside of her new world, while helping David to do the right thing.

I was hoping this book would get better than the first book but I was disappointed. There was so much unnecessary drama between all of the characters.
SpoilerIf their powers will slowly disappear if David isn't near them, then in the first book she could have just left and would have been able to have a normal life in a different place. It kind of defeats the purpose of her being forced into the role.

Awesome, and just as fun and quick of a read as the last one. Can't wait for the next one!

Definitely not as good as the first book, but I still enjoyed it. I'mstill reeling from the shock of how it ended. It CANNOT end that way. Just over?

Remember how I said in my review of Rebel Belle that I’d review the other books in this series? It only took me nearly a year, but here we are!

Yet again, the first thing I have to say about this series is that Hawkins has one of my favorite writing styles, and that’s really what struck me in this second book, which, honestly, might err more on the 3.5 star side than a true 4 star. Despite my love for Hawkins’ writing, this second installment in the series does suffer some from the dreaded second book slump … but not as horribly as it could have! (I’ve read some real bad second book slump books, like, oof. Miss Mayhem wasn’t fantastic in the second book department, but it wasn’t horrible.)

I still loved Harper the most out of everything that happened in this second book and, to avoid spoilers, her attitude towards everything actually ended up being my favorite aspect if only because of how she is as a character, and how little she really strays from that notion of herself. Harper is Harper is Harper, and I think that was just the best part.

I did have to knock that star (and a half) off, though, also because Harper is Harper is Harper. Again, second book slump, don’t expect a hell of a lot out of it. I just maybe expected a little more than I got. I did still love a lot of the interactions between the characters (some more than others … COUGH), but, being teenagers, they did have their teenager moments, and maybe I’m getting a bit crochety in my old late twenties (that’s a joke — kind of), but I can only take so much teenage melodrama before I’m itching to shove them back into battle and watch shit fly.

Thankfully, that’s basically how these books go, as they’re about school kids learning to battle like Paladins and Oracles and whosawhatsits, to put it pretty badly. No spoilers, but we’ve got basically the same pacing as the first book, so if you’ve read that, you know what’s coming.

All in all, not a terrible book, really, but I gotta say it had a stronger start than this second book was able to live up to, and … well, since I’ve already read the third book at the time of writing this review, I have some THINGS to say about the third book.

(Not that they’ll really be in the review when it comes, because BIG SPOILERS, but I’ll most likely be ranting vaguely where I can. So, you know. Be ready for that.)

Y’all don’t even know how much it hurts me to rate this two stars. I loved Rebel Belle, you guys. It was Southern and sassy and our leading lady’s name was Harper, I mean … what’s more to love? I was expecting the same thing after Miss Mayhem was released, and honestly I was confused with basically all of it. All of the charm that Rebel Belle had did not appear in Miss Mayhem.

I basically fell in love with Rebel Belle because of Harper’s and David’s relationship. There was a lot of UST and sass (so much sass!! I am all about the sass *flips hair*) so obviously, I am on that boat! And then, you know, the life boat gave me Miss Mayhem and sadly, I have to get off.

Miss Mayhem was dry, dull and sass-less. The characters that I fell in love with in the first book lacked life and turned into annoying characters that I did not recognize. I am actually extremely distraught by this fact. To summarize Miss Mayhem, Harper is not really David’s Paladin unless she successfully completes an ancient trial. This trial was actually Super Lame. A lot of the time, I felt like Harper was doing a whole lot of nothing. A lot of the actual trial consisted of Harper facing her fears, and honestly? The trials were boring. There is not one thing exciting about the trials that Harper face, I honestly couldn’t even tell that she was in a trial until after the fact. Seriously, they’re that boring.

David and Harper’s relationship was not the relationship that I fell in love with in Rebel Belle. They were completely unrecognizable here. There was no sass at all, and I feel like this may be because now they’re no longer mortal enemies but boyfriend and girlfriend. This saddens me because in Rebel Belle, despite the fact that they did get together somewhere towards the end, there was still the little bit of omph in their relationship, you know? Also, there weren’t a lot of boyfriend/girlfriend moments that I enjoyed either. In fact, there were very few of them, and a lot of this has to do with the little twist that I thought was seriously dumb. I mean, what? I didn’t even enjoy the relationship at all.

Speaking of relationships, the thing between Ryan and Bee? I was not into it at all. I called it way back in the beginning of the book, but I was definitely not enthused when it actually happened. I feel like it totally could’ve left a different taste in my mouth if it was handled differently, but bleh. I was not into it.

ALSO THE ENDING, WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK?! No, that was not okay. UGH. Almost as bad as Frostfire’s ending … almost.

So, yeah, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I was hoping I would. I’m really holding out for the third and final instalment because seriously, this is just not cool.
