Major TW: grief, racism.

Most of the writing in this book was so beautiful. It did get repetitive and slow at several parts, though. That, some of my least liked tropes (insta love, love triangle), and the not so great world building are why I did not rate it higher. Some of the world building and commonly used terms in this book I still do not understand because they were never explained. Most of the action and “the good stuff” takes place at the end. All of that being said, this book was still great. It is absolutely worth a try.

I recommend this book and will definitely be reading the next.

This book cured my reading slump completely. I find Bree to be such a compelling main character because she is who I was during my first years of college, where I attended a PWI. A seventeen year old black girl who was an early college student, I saw myself in her story. This story tackles themes of racism, sexism, and grief with tender love and care. It asks you questions of nurture versus nature, if your destiny is written in your blood or if you have to power to be who you want, love who you want. Even though I’m two years removed from seventeen, I’m sure if I’d read it then, I’d feel exactly the same way! If you want an introduction to fantasy that’s grounded in the real world, read this, you won’t regret it.

Fast paced (I wish the romance was more developed before being established), but overall the themes and plot twists are well done

Would be 5 stars if the protagonist was older. Her being in "early college" at 16 is dumb and is not necessary just make it actual college especially for what happens at the end of the book like no spoilers but 16 is ridiculous for that ending in my opinion.

If I could give this story 900 stars, I would! It’s so wonderfully written, a mystery that’s woven throughout the fabric of the entire book and threads beyond, each piece important and coming together until it culminates in the end. Bree’s journey with her grief, her rage, the racism she experiences resonates with me; I could see a lot of myself in her when it came to the way white people looked at her. And the rage, that knee-jerk flash that overtakes you, was familiar too, like looking into a mirror. While I was a little annoyed at times with Bree’s reactions—largely in response to her friend Alice’s questions—it also made Bree feel more realistic, well-rounded. Like an actual person. Tracy weaves an incredibly complex, realistic portrayal of grief and trauma and rage from the perspective of a girl who, feasibly, could’ve been me. Then fantasy she threads into her words is revealed bit by bit, though I would’ve probably enjoyed a glossary since it was a little confusing. I loved Nick and Bree’s chemistry, how genuine Nick was, sweet their romance was. I even grew to like Sel, who I rolled my eyes at the minute he showed up because of course he’s broody and mysterious—he’s the black-haired white guy in what I think is a love triangle. His story’s a heartbreaking one. Each of these kids have sad stories, actually, and I feel like it only added character to them! By far my favorite read.

I never expected to love this book as much as I did. Once I started reading, I only put it down when I absolutely had to. It was somewhat difficult to get into the first bit where all the worldbuilding is getting laid out because it’s given all at once and feels heavy handed, but it ends up working out so well. As a certified Arthurian legend girly, I loved how this built on the legends and subverted expectations.

I can’t decide to what degree I like this book. The first thing I can say is that it’s a really good book. Well-written, fast paced, interesting, and great themes and emotions.

A few things I didn’t like, though. The main one being there are way too many characters and titles and connections for me to remember. I eventually gave up trying and just vibed with a number of the characters as a conglomerate.

I’d also say it’s too fast paced in the sense that it all takes place over the span of, like, three weeks. That was a lot to go through in such a short amount of time, especially when you consider the relationships between characters.

And while I’m not as interested in reading about such young characters as I once was, this story is so well-written and interesting that I’ll likely be finding myself reading more of the series some day
