"The dragons want to save Papi."

Are you Puerto Rican??  GET THIS BOOK!!  Dragon Riders, mofongo, panderetas, and crowds cheering "Boricua!"  I was most impressed at the similarities between the main character's relationships with her parents and my own.  I was able to relate to so many emotions at a much deeper level than others probably would.

I have PLENTY of quotation tabs and fun Puerto Rico reference tabs that I can't wait to share with my siblings.  I wish I had this book when I was younger, so much of Lana reminds me of me!

I have to remind myself this is a young adult book and hope many of the plot holes will be explained in book 2.  To me this book is more of a 4.5.  It was close to DNF in the first chapter with the over abundance of adjectives for miscellaneous items.  Almost every item seemed to have a description that didn't feel integral to the story.  Luckily however this did not continue in the rest of the book and I was able to get sucked into the story.  Next we have a young teenager with zero training who is able to figure out every scheme or solution before the government officials or trained dragon riders can... it was a stretch closer to "unbelievable".

The plot is extremely unique and I can't wait to start the next book ASAP!

All Lana wants to do is represent her home country of Puerto Rico in the Blazewrath games as a runner. When the wand shop she is visiting with her cousin, mother, and best friend is attacked, the head of the games offers her the position. Meanwhile, the Sire, a crazy dragon cursed into the form of a man is attacking sanctuaries with Lana's favorite former Blazewrath player Takeshi Endo, and the games are his next target, or are they? What is the Sire's true goal? How far will he go to get it, and what part will Lana play in all of this? #BlazewrathGames #NetGalley

Skewed slightly too young for me so the character motivations fell flat to me. All around pretty mid, but I think a younger reader would love it.

Blazewrath Games is set an exciting world much like ours, except magic and dragons are fully integrated into regular life. Those with magic and those without (Regulars) live side-by-side, both aware of the other. Snippets from this world's books introduce relevant pieces about the history of dragons at the beginning of chapters, which are a nice way to get the backstory on where our main character, Lana, finds herself. Ostensibly about an exciting athletic competition in which dragons compete, the book reveals that there is much more to the story: conspiracies, magic, sacrifice. There are wonderful friendships, on and off team, and Lana's relationship with her parents comes across as very genuine. Enjoyable read, and I am glad to hear there will be a sequel!

DID NOT FINISH: 8%

the writing in this book is giving "y/n is kidnapped by one direction" vibes (derogatory). the writing style is so elementary, and the narration of a 17 year old is absolutely atrocious... not to mention the dialogue is weirdly formal and not sincere at all - it feels like something i would have written in 5th grade. i'm so disappointed - the concept sounds interesting, but when the entire first 3 pages is just pure exposition dump in the most painfully obvious way possible, and when the book uses tell not show to convey information, i just couldn't bring myself to keep going.

DNF, pg 36

Ugh. This review is closer to 2.5 stars but I bumped it up because there was a LOT of good representation across the board, but the narrator was reeeeally annoying the first half of the book.

The plot picked up about halfway through though, and it became a little more bearable. I refuse to get over how the mc commented on the hips of every woman she met though. Like why.

yahoo! i missed binging books in 24 hrs or less. this was such a fun adventure that i really needed in between a lot of other heavier reads.

this book went along the same lines of "ok, yeah, the ending is kind of predictable but I DONT CARE I LOVE IT ANYWAY" the bond of the dragons with their riders and team PR really warmed my heart, and i can't get over what they did at the end. absolutely wonderful story, especially with how the MC wasn't some all powerful savior. she just brought together an awesome team of people who formed like voltron to become a savior — lovin it!!!

(in this alternate universe i hope i'm eligible for team philippines, y'all know i would kick major buttcheeks as a charger!!)
