Lynn painter is my go-to rom com recommendation author.
It is feel-good, amusing, filled with banter and great phone texts.

Who can find love first? This is the wager between Halley and Jack who have been burnt one too many times by the dating world.

This time it’s the male who believes in love and falling hard and the female who is there for a good time.

“What could make this day more fun than a one-up challenge?”
She grinned. “What’s a one-up challenge?”
“A truth-or-dare of sorts. One-upping each other. I hold your hand, so you stroke that thumb of yours in a way that makes me fucking crazy. I kiss you, and you . . . one-up me, somehow.”

I have listened to every book by Painter via audiobook and this is definitely the way to go. Especially with the third person dual pov.

The first 70% was definitely more engaging to me as this is where their banter shined. After this, they are introduced to a wedding setting and the stakes are raised as drama is introduced.

I do find this with all of Painter’s books I have read so far. There is always a whiplash ending and a slight inconsistency of the characters from the first half to the second half.

I did not read Mr Wrong Number before this (I didn’t even know this was technically a book two) and didn’t feel like I missed out on anything.

i still hate lynn painter’s writing, but this was definitely better than mr wrong number. hallie was a more likeable protagonist than liv, but that wasn’t enough to save the cringey writing style.. funny thing is, i found the plot more boring and cliche than mr wrong number. not sure how else to explain it but it sounding like a teenager’s blog posts in long form, but not in the fun, entertaining way. corny as hell. the kind of writing style that will just age poorly.

entertaining hate read though, i’ll give it that!

Quick read. Cute book with a fun premise. The Diddy line aged poorly though…

3.5 Stars.
I actually quite enjoyed this book but I definitely took issue with a couple things. Jack and Hallie's first initial meeting and get-together was fun and sexy and I liked that a friendship formed from their one night. Their friendship quickly became the thing that I enjoyed the most because it felt organic and you could feel the underlying sexual tension slowly grow. Their wager of who could fall in love first could only end with someone getting hurt. The biggest issue I had was with the conflict between Jack and Hallie. Every romcom just HAS to have one but Jack was very clearly in the wrong. What he did was pretty shitty and he didn't even think so.
I did like the ending and love confession because it wasn't polished at all. The nod to Pride and Prejudice was cute and I think they made a good couple in the end.

Sweet little friends to lovers romance with great banter!
