Imagine a world where the supernatural are forced to unite and govern with representatives ...
Yup thats the one Jessa might end up destroying
descriptiondescription

Jessa is an alpha wolf who never fit so obviously prefers a group of 4 dare-devil brothers each born with a different power.

The Compass brothers !! Braxton dragon shifter&possible-love-interest#1, Tyson magic user, Jacob fey, and Maximusvampire&possible-love-interest#2

TBH, I read Dragon Marked cuz she also wrote Trickery of the Gods & I hoped she would dazzle me again with interesting love interests, unique world-building, and a sassy heroine.
I was not disappointed.
description

With these powerful arrogant males, Jessa often feels the need to prove her dominance and kick ass. Because consequences are just something for Tomorrow-Jessa to figure out!
“Why is it that no one shows my wolf her due respect?” He smirked. “Well it might be a dog eat dog world, but... a dragon eats everyone.”

What I loved most about Jess was: She didn't take orders from anyone but she also isn't a complete moron and knew when to ask for help. She NEVER blindly follows orders, mah gurl
description

So all these different species all unite in their hatred to stop a (evil?) dragon lord from rising again. But we don't really get the whole backstory of the dragon lord. Like what the fuck happened the first time he was in power ?? But apparently he schemes and selects people to bear a 'dragon mark'
description

The Four are a group of brothers that hunt down the marked but again ..... not a lot is known about their group ... except they aren't cute like the Compasses !! Are yall seeing a kinda common theme of the bad guys having no back story smh
“ They wore identical cold, hard expressions. Could their parents even tell them apart? No wonder they were known as the Four, there seemed to be no individuality about them at all.
And they were mutha-effing-scary.”

And the dragon mark? A mystery for our characters to unravel. Little is known except they are hunted down and thrown into prison (Compass's future job.) Oh and Jessa is one of those marked whoop whoop

Now the humorrrr in this book, just bloody brilliant. One of my favorite scenes was when Four tried to sway everyone the scene was just so fucking funny and her POV made it even better
“Shit, he even had me convinced that the dragon marked were going to take over the world, and I was one of them”

description

Why is it that most SiNgLe HeRoInE "OH SO TRAGIC" *eye roll* fLaW ~ is the same bodytype too skinny and don't eat enough *head shake* BUT NOT THIS CHICK!
“For the first time since we entered the prison, I was depressed. Braxton grinned as he sat down right next to me. “All that we’ve gone through in the last few days and finally you’re upset because of shitty food”

My two major complaints:
One: All the sudden Mom and Sister come to Jessa's world when TBH i was interested in her life without them.. plus sister was annoying AF and kept asking questions. Back to the action please!!
description

Second was the ever cliche twist on the Four:
Spoiler"I couldn’t understand how they didn’t see this, that in their quest to prevent evil they had become evil.”

Riiight. I guess after so many of these bad "good" guys, I just wanted a general bad guy to fight and overcome. But I also wanted some background info on the bad guys, guess I'm needy like that

Overall a super entertaining world, I am definitely reading the rest of this. I pray to the Book Gods that it doesn't turn into a complete love triangle. On to book 2!

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one. Told through first point of view, Jessa is part of an elite group of ruling supernaturals destined to eventually take over the small town council. Supernaturals are segregated from the human population by choice, with their own town ran with their own systems - all businesses, the prison, the school are supernaturally ran and inhabited. The variety of supernaturals is widely diverse, from every type of shapeshifter including the rare dragon, vampires, magic users called wizards, the fey, mermaids, etc. Jessa gets some startling discoveries in this book concerning not only her family, but herself.

It starts a bit awkwardly but after the first two chapters really takes off. At first I feared Jessa would be another smug and annoying heroine, but she's actually awesome. Amusing, genuine, compassionate, tough when she needs to be. The bond with her and the four elect felt a little false at first (how could they all care THAT much??) but it grew on me, as did her family and the rest of the paper players.

I don't want to spoil the surprise by revealing the plot, but it's layered in events and pacing. They don't stay in one place long but there is no rushed exhaustion. It has heart and it has story. There's a relationship brewing on the horizon but the story is the front focus first. I'm not sure with the ending if there is also a betrayal (wouldn't surprise me), but I'm itching to read the second and see what happens next.

Besides the enjoyable writing skill and characterization, the world is interesting with some unique touches through the 'dragon marked' legend.

Unfortunately the back blurb of this book gives way too much of the story and surprise element away, but I guess they do that to hook potential readers. It's not fully accurate as much more happens, and the prison stay is thankfully brief.

Coolest book about supernaturals ever?
Erm… it could go both ways.

What I Liked:
~ Jessa has spunk and no filter. She has no problems giving people her two cents.
Dragon shifters are awesome, hands down.
~ The concept – a supernatural community just to guard a prison for supernatural criminals? Oh, and those prisons are being broken into and no one knows how? Plus, the main character is dragon marked (prophesized to raise some sort of dragon king of a thousand years ago) and the Quads (aka four brothers who turn heads everywhere they turn) are supposed to hunt and kill her? Grabby hands ensues. Because I just adore potential best friends turned murderer type of stories.
~ Possessiveness: I normally really hate possessiveness, but Jaymin Eve doesn’t overplay it. Possessiveness is a part of the culture for the supernaturals, but Jessa isn’t sheltered.

What I Didn’t Like:
~ Does anyone have a problem with an entire family ruling most of the American Supernatural council? I mean, there’s a scuffle or two that carries as the main plot of the first book, but for the most part, almost everyone is completely okay with the Quads taking over 4/5 of the council.
~ Every page or two (maybe a little more), there’s a bomb of information about the supernaturals. Some are repetitive with the usual tropes, but I might be okay with that. Just a little.
~ Eve has humor throughout the book, but um… too much information sometimes. It doesn’t clash too well with Jessa’s personality. No filter humor? Little kid guilty of peeking at the wrong time.

All in all, Dragon Marked does have potential. But while there might be one plot in just one book, the overall arc of the story is primarily set up with lots of information.

And tootles to everyone who handles a no filter main character with the occasional weird humor better than me.

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the whole concept of secret supernatural societies existing in towns of their own, hidden from the real world. The characters were great fun and the Compass boys were pretty amazing :-). All in all I felt this was a light hearted and fun take on supernaturals, but it was still filled with well rounded characters and plenty of action. A highlight was the originality of the Dragon Marked and learning how that came to be. I can’t wait to start the next book in the series

I liked the world in this book and I thought that the world was clearly shown and explained but the writing made everything seemed really rushed.
Spoiler
Jessa’s mother comes back and it turns out that she was away hiding Jessa’s twin, Mischa, as it seemed like the best way to protect them. I got that it was all a misunderstanding and that Jessa didn’t really have a real reason to hate her mother anymore but her mother is basically a stranger to her now and even though Jessa didn’t really have a close relationship with her mother I thought that there could have been a bit more reserve. I didn’t like how quickly Mischa was accepted into the pack as, sure she was Jessa’s sister, but she was still a stranger and I just didn’t like her so I didn’t like how quickly everyone just accepted her.

The Compasses are taken to the prison to await their trial and that week is basically skipped over. Then Braxton and Jessa have to stay in the prison because they were caught trying to sneak out of it. While I liked the idea of these events, everything was too fast paced as it made the events seem unimportant when everything that happened was serious as they could have died. Also I wanted to see more of what happened in the prison as the first and last days of Braxton and Jessa’s stay in the prison were shown.

I didn’t really like how fast everything happened at the end as nothing was really detailed but it fit in with the situation and what Jessa was feeling.

I loved the Curse of the Gods series so much! I really wanted to try lore of the writer's work but this wasn't it for me.

Willa was funny, clumsy and over the top. She was likable and I got into her story right away. Jessa just wasn't it. She was the perfect girl, with a powerful father, powerful shifter form (alpha), awesome bestfriends (who I'm not sure she's going to be doing all of them soon or just one) and basically a awesome life. I didn't relate. Also, the vibe I got from the characters was more high school than college, they seemed quite immature especially for people who are going to be the ruler of the world in 3 years (?)

The sister/twin/double shifter thing was also a lot to handle on top of the prison, the awesome best friends to become presidents, the deaths. Like do we like her? Do we don't? Everything was just very confusing

One thing that confused me too was the prison? It's the name of the series and yet it's a ghost prison? Idk I don't get it

2 disappointed stars

I received this book free through Goodreads First Reads.

AMAZING!!! I loved this book. This book hooks you on the first page and will take you on an amazing journey. The characters were well written and you can really connect with them. Loved the relationship between Jessa and the quads.

I cannot wait to get the second book in the series to read what happens next.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hmmm... where do I start? I really wanted to like this book but I felt that it fell flat. The characters were good but they didn't stand out. It seemed that the main characters didn't grow in this book which is a shame. I guess I just expected more in regards to character growth and character depth.

I did like the plot and I thought that the story was good for the most part. The storyline kept me interested for the most part and I was interested to learn more but in the end it didn't capture my attention like I was hoping.

Ultimately, I liked the book but it really didn't stand out to me. I wish that there was more character growth and depth. I thought that it was a fun idea and I wish that it was more flushed out.
