It took me a little bit to get into this book. At first, it read a bit like a young adult fiction book. Eventually, however, it seems the reader and the writer get into feel of each character, into their personalities and their cadences. By the second part of the book, the rhythm of each character is established.

It is a sad book, but the tragedy, for me at least, did not become fully realized until the last pages of the book. By then, I found tears pooling in my eyes. Considering how detached I was to the story at the beginning, this surprised me. By end, however, the voices of the sisters have penetrated the heart. This is a story whose final imagery will stay with me for a very long time.

Got this as an audio book. The first two chapters were okay. It was to early to decide if I liked the book.

Each chapter was read by a different narrator. The first two narrators were okay, but not great. But I almost immediately stopped listening with the third chapter because the narrator made a type of lip smacking sound when she talked. It was disgusting and I couldn’t listen.

Maybe It would be better as an ebook or paperback, but this just doesn’t work at all as an audio book. Yuck!

In my opinion, this is a very compelling story told in an occasionally not very compelling way. While individual passages in this book are often beautiful prose rich in meaning, the narrative as a whole is oddly paced, and has many scenes and moments I wished had been narrated with more detail and less summary.

I feel like the story can be a bit repetitive at times, and that it doesn't always have a clear development for all of the characters, but overall it paints individual scenes and montages pretty well, with many horrors of dictatorship paired with quite a bit of beautiful and meaningful writing related to the sisters' state of mind.

It can also be hard to distinguish a bit between the personalities of the main three women, as it seems like they often experience and focus on similar issues (fear and uncertainty, being strong, becoming part of the revolution, etc.). Nonetheless the characters are very interesting and tragically compelling. Even with the ending known at the start of the book, it was still impactful enough to help the book's themes and messages sink in. Overall, definitely worth reading.

This book always breaks my heart. It is beautifully written, emotional, and inspiring. I love to see the strength and courage of las Mariposas. Reading it, I connected with each of the sisters in a special way. It is a very important book that I highly recommend to anyone.

This book gives a human face to the struggle for democracy in the Dominican Republic and it humanizes the leaders of the fourteenth of June movement, all be it a combination of truths and fiction.

The writing feels intimate and the stories of the four sisters is beautifully interwoven. I love the counter pose between the casual, personal tone of the writing and the dark content of the story.

This is a fictionalized history of the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic during the mid twentieth century dictatorship. It's well written with an unusual but compelling organization. This is not normally the kind of book I read, but I found it interesting. This was a history lesson for me, and a reminder of how people can get used to gradually encroaching oppression. We all find ourselves eventually in that place where we have to accept increasingly intolerable oppression or face the fear that stands between us and freedom. This book, I think, is about that.
