This is a love story and a story full of life. Ruth Reichl lets us walk with her through her tenure as The New York Times food critic. Along the way we taste the food, hear the reviews and observe Ruth's connection to parts of herself she may not have been connected to, but which influence the way she interprets the world. As each diner and meal comes forth we know more about dining in New York (which can be wildly fun), we gather recipes and recommendations, find thoughts on food and we get to know Ms. Reichl a bit better. I learned more about myself too. And, isn't that why we read in the first place?

This was such a fun read. During the years she was the restaurant critic for the New York Times, Ruth Reichl would frequently put on a disguise before visiting a restaurant so she could escape notice. The chapters describing her escapades are interspersed with recipes and copies of the reviews she wrote. I’ll never visit any of the restaurants she reviewed- when we travel, we are always on a budget- but it was fascinating to me to see how she did her research and what she was looking for. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Will definitely be on the lookout for other books by this author.

This book was delightful! I so enjoyed Ruth’s stories of her “characters” as she dined in the restaurants of NY. I could have listened to more and more!

I LOVED this book. The anecdotes, the recipes, I hope she continues. I was starving all the way through this book.
