Definitely the darkest of all the Hitchhiker books. Adams immediately lets go of the Fenchurch character, who I felt had at least a semblance of a personality and worked well with Arthur. But you learn to not hold on to narrative devices with Adams as he moves willy-nilly through his universe with reckless abandon. I had to read all the books all at once because they are in one compendium and thats how my OCD works but in retrospect I probably wouldn't do it again. On to Hawthorne!

I think this is my favourite in the series – after the original, naturally.
Also, it includes the line, ‘Oh, so you think time flows that way, do you?’

This book started out slowly, then became exciting again to end on a lackluster note. Not bad, but the worst of the five I've read so far.
But that's not to blame on Adams' fault, as the man admitted himself that it was a book that should not have been written. So I'll excuse him for that.
I won't excuse him for dying and not making it up with a proper 6th book though.

Not reviewing each individual book from this series lol.
The first book was cute, I can see how the unique writing style and surreal approach to sci-fi made it popular when it was released and cemented itself as a cult classic. As the series continued, though, I was praying for the sweet release of the final page. It felt like Adams got too caught up in making up words and ever-increasing surreal scenes that the actual story was kind of placed on the back burner.
His commitment to making up every 3rd word and need to create the most convoluted surrealist landscape really made it difficult to follow the actual story and still enjoy it. I'm glad the books are read and I'm happy I can finally have a real opinion on the series, but would not re-read or recommend.

I might be one of the few people who actually liked this book. I liked Random Frequent Flyer Dent. I liked the sense of certain doom that had been ringing through the whole book. I liked the guide that came from nowhere and went nowhere. But most of all, I liked the King.
