It's a good story, but something about it falls flat —  the heroism, the sacrifice, and the starkly differentiated levels of development of the different race/species are entirely in earnest. I'm not sure if it's complexity, irony, or something else that I'm missing.

SHES DONE IT AGAIN THE FUCKING LITTLE BASTARD

Ursula just won't miss. This is a high fantasy story disguised as a sci-fi story that really works on both fronts, even if the sci-fi aspects are there mostly as flavor. The story itself is simple but full of the deliciously evocative and lyrical prose she's known for, providing color to a sparse plot that nonetheless feels clever and weighty with big timeskips, a cast of characters that's just the right size and all of which are fun to ponder, plenty of questions and great worldbuilding peppered all throughout.

Some of the best worldbuilding I've ever read. Characters are unique, with their own motivations and abilities; the action is engaging, the internal and external conflict well-balanced, the fun and philosophy interwoven to create a good and satisfying read.

Also, as a queer millennial lover of the genre, this is one of the VERY few speculative fiction novels where following a cis het man through a hero's journey was actually an enjoyable, relatable, emotionally moving adventure.
