This was my second Koontz read. I absolutely loved Watchers. This book was a hard read because of the abuse to Melanie and other minor characters. I like the writing, but found the topics of mind control and the descriptions of the deaths to be hard to read through. Loved our main character — Dan, we need more police officers like him.

I actually really liked this one! It has a slow start but once you get into it, it really engulfs you. Throws you off track a bit here and there but the explanation is satisfying. I wanted a bit more out of the ending, but overall a real good read.

i have a hard time with koontz.
the plots never change (from book to book). the characters never change (from book to book)
his newer stuff is better. eventually a good guy (even if only a secondary character) needs to lose, the dog needs to die, the male protagonist needs to not be honorable and alone, and/or the female protagonist needs to have not overcome some horrible childhood tragedy that makes her withdrawn, but generally a good person just needing a knight to come save her.

so while they are usually enjoyable, i am not able to tell you which books of his i've read and which ones i haven't unless i look at my library.

I have read this book a long time ago but couldn't remember it so decided to read it again. I loved it just as much the second time as I did the first! This book is interesting and becomes more interesting and is definitely a page turner as you want to just keep reading to see what will happen. There is some language and maybe a sex scene but neither of those were too noticeable and didn't take away from the story. There is child abuse mentioned and a lot of violence; some people would probably say graphic violence but I'm either not that bothered by it or it wasn't that bad. If you like Dean Koontz, Stephen King and books of that sort - then I'd definitely recommend this one. Even though it was written in 1984, it's still great. He does seem to use the term "autism" to mean mute or something similar but it doesn't seem to be done intentionally or in an offensive way but if that would bother you, then maybe skip this book.

The ending was a bit of a letdown, but other than that it was an enjoyable story.

Little Melanie is kidnapped by her wacky-science daddy and experimented on until she's found again some years later, in less than savory circumstances. As her mum & Deputy Dan plan to snog, I mean, try to solve the mystery of what was done to her, we are left to wonder, is Melanie perhaps more than she seems?

Well of course she is or this would have been a dull novel!
And yes, it's three sorts of predictable, but it's fun!
Not often do you get a kid able to serve back what was served to her, for that alone I'm like here's a bundle of stars on this review and my happy face!

Recommended for lite horror lovers, folk who love kids and other folk who wouldn't do anything bad to nasty people, but should accidents happen...

One of those books whose story will stay with you years after you have read it.

This one was scary...in a good way. I could hardly put it down.

Roughly about 3.5. It was a gripping read, and I did enjoy it, but the outdated views on autism are definitely hard to look past. I understand at the time it wasn't a well researched topic, and it's interesting to learn how it was viewed in the eighties, but it's a book that doesn't age well.

Nonetheless, it's a decent enough read, if you're interested in the idea of brainwashing/the effects it has on the human psyche. Probably wouldn't read again.
