Two misfits find each other in this odd love story. Peggy is lonely and James is an oddity. She feels she must care for him and he allows it. Their friendship, from the time he is 11, grows into love. They need each other. Her, to give her a purpose in life, and him, so that he feels someone will love him for who he is. It's a touching book.

I love this book. I am so in love with this book that I don't want anyone I love to read it because I don't want to hear that they didn't love it as much as I do. I love the metaphors, the love, the way the author crossed boundaries and surpassed most people's sense of normalcy. I love the characters. Peggy Cort is a beautiful creature.

I'm pretty sure I read this and I'm pretty sure I liked it. I was just reading reviews of her memoir An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination and wondered what novels she had written and discovered this. Perhaps I'll give the memoir a chance in spite of it's potentially grim subject matter. Meantime, I'm going to re-read this.

Written by a former librarian, and this definitely shows in her narrator's observations about life as a librarian. I ended up caring more about the librarian narrator's emotional life than anything else, but I think because of her personality, and the control she has over telling the story, we never really got to see enough of the other characters besides James, the giant of the title. It's an odd story in some ways, but also one that makes you want to go out and LIVE when you finish reading it.

The subject was crazy unusual and I think her writing is gorgeous. I was highlighting things like crazy. I will definitely try other books by her.

charming and full of love. Reminds you of the good nature in humans. The setting is also nice and gives you a good cape feel.

I can’t decide if this a 3 or 4 star. The writing is a 4 star at least. Peggy is not anywhere near that, sadly. I hate goodreads for not offering half stars.

Anyway, I kind of want to let this book digest before a real review, and I think it’ll stick with me for long enough to do so.
I absolutely love the writing style. It’s a gorgeously written book. It starts off intriguing. I knew the content would be odd and I was prepared for that. But I did not find Peggy to be a very like able character, or to be awful enough that even that might make her intriguing. She’s selfish and while I understand her a bit, it’s only fragments here or there.
I like bizarre but this wasn’t enough to make me fall in love, or Fully grasp the love in the story. That being said, I finished it in a day. Beautiful style.
