No qualms about it, this is such an enjoyable and fulfilling fantasy duology. It’s one of my favorites and I love the path it takes its readers down.
The Queen’s Resistance picks up shortly after the first book, and the people of Maevana are figuring out how to piece their country back together after returning the rightful queen to her throne.
Although I missed some of the swoony romance aspects of the first book, when Brienna and Cartier are in the initial stages of their relationship, I appreciated even more the team they are in this one and the earnestness between them.
This sequel definitely brings in more of the politics of the aftermath of a revolution and I greatly enjoyed the intrigue in weeding out dissenters and learning more about the houses of Maevana and their people. There are quite a few intriguing twists and the action kept the story moving forward with a consistent pace. Furthermore, it continues to build upon the theme of forging a family of your own making, not necessarily one based on blood. I found this message to be one of the most powerful aspects of the story.
Really love this one though. It’s a solid and easy to love fantasy with all of the expected and well loved elements of the genre, with some intriguing qualities that make it a little different as well. Highly recommend!

Rebecca Ross’s Queen’s Rising was a complete and total five star read for me. I loved it just as much in a second read through. This one is a 4.5/5. Not because it wasn’t brilliant, just because I had a little trouble adjusting to the dual pov’s. I kept getting a page or two in, and then realising that I was reading in the wrong characters voice. For this reason ALONE it’s not a 5.
Opening with a quick catch up and a bunch of exposition (which tbh, I wish could be more like Jay Kristoff or Amie Kaufman do with their “here’s what happened previously”) the action quickly clicks in. Literally starting from the final chapter of Rising, the reader is thrown into the morally grey miasma of what happens AFTER you win the grand battle.
And I LOVE it. There is not a happy ending. There are a lot of hard decisions to make, a lot of compromises, alliances, secrets, and traumas that have gone in for generations. The new Queen, and her inner circle are no longer the rebels, they are the ones trying to hold together a fractured people, and find a new way of living together. However, they also have to deal with the people’s need to see justice and retribution for the horrors they have suffered.
And are still suffering. The characters still have a lot to go through. They have enemies to defeat, they have their own inner turmoil. Many of the main characters share bloodlines with the perpetrators of horrific deeds.
However. You don’t choose your blood, you choose your family. You don’t choose your past, you choose your future

This was such a great sequel! It did not disappoint it was everything I wanted and more! It had the perfect balance of action and not too romance! However, it would have been nice if there were a few more scenes with Brienna and Cartier!
I have been highly anticipating this book for 12 months and now I’ve finished it! Sadly, I don’t think there will be any more books in this world :(
I really enjoyed this book, just as much as the first book.
Characters: I loved Brienna as a protagonist and loved the inclusion of Cartier’s perspective. I loved that the whole story was not centred on the romance, but there was just enough to make you swoon. However there are soooo many characters and it’s hard to keep track, thank goodness for the guide in the front of the book. I loved a lot of the new characters that were introduced, however I do wish the villains had a bit more dimension.
Plot: the storyline was great and full of action, however I will say that some of the pacing was a bit odd. Some things were a bit toooo convenient. However, I loved how the whole story wrapped up.
Writing: having just finished Kingdom of Ash, I did find that this book was written for a bit of a younger audience, like some of the writing was really obvious and things were explained directly to the reader , rather than letting ya figure it out.
Overall I enjoyed it !

Overall:
Content warnings: torture
Rep: biracial mc, found family, sisterly bonds, siblings bonds, father/daughter bond
Thoughts
Neutral thoughts:
I didn't know going into this that this was going to be in duel perspective between Brienna and Cartier! And I thought that was really interesting and it honestly kept me more engaged with the story.
The pacing in this one was MUCH better than it's predecessor, but I think it definitely still could have been worked on.
Pros:
The relationship between Jourdain and Brienna was so cute!! I really liked seeing their relationship grow and grow stronger
