Welp.

I loved loved loved Swanson’s debut novel - “A Kind Worth Killing.” And “Her Every Fear” was also very good.

But since then - it just feels like the author is churning these out to cash his checks. And the novels just get progressively worse.

This book sure meets its promise. Nine Lives. And slowly but surely they die. And then there some half-assed twists and a last chapter letter to lamely explain the culprit’s motive.

The story is left with tons of loose threads and not much to remember.

This book is a modern day take on Agatha Christie’s famous And Then There Were None. The plot moved along at a good clip driven by the actions of interesting characters. However, in the end the book fell short for me by the vagueness of the ending.

*** MILD SPOILERS ***

Who gave the killer the device that made the Carbon Dioxide release? Why would they just “give it” to the killer? Did they know what the killer was going to use it for? How did the hiring out of the one murder work - did the killer just look up Killers For Hire on yellowpages.com? What about that other murder that the killer had “inside information on” - that person was under police protection. So, where did this inside information come from - the police? If so, why would that person kelp the killer? Etc.

Ehhh…

This book stressed me out from a parent’s point of view of how to protect my child from a similar fate as Faye.

But overall I thought the killers motive was sorta half baked. I mean, I get it completely from a literal sense, but it didn’t feel a strong enough reason to have innocent people die in place of the people he had a real beef with. Just fell flat for me.

Enjoyable. Quick read.
