I found it was hard to get into the story for the first half. The second half was a much quicker read, as events transpired that put everything together. An important story to tell.

The writing style was hard for me to get past. I found myself rereading parts like 3x or more only to not understand what was being said.

This strolled along, seeming like a literary fiction book focused on how black women are ignored by the cops and media, when BOOM. Suddenly it turned into something very different, with a twist out of a thriller. I was not expecting it at all, but looking back there were hints. This turned into a look at mental health and accepting help. It was very good, but there was something holding me back from going from liking it to really liking it. It keeps you at a distance, which makes sense considering, but it kept me from being totally absorbed in the story.

I liked parts of it a lot but overall it moved a bit too slow for a thriller in my opinion

This is not a thriller and I think it does a dissservice to readers to describe it that way. It deserves higher ratings. It's a book about the aftermath of trauma and living with mental illness in a world that doesn't see black women as 100% human or deserving of care. It's rare to get a book that deals with mental health with a black woman as the main character. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

I almost stopped reading not even half way through but I hung in there. After a super slow start about half way through the book it picks up and starts to make sense but man the transitions darn near took me out. I got lost a few times which required me to go back and re-read a few chapters. Once I realized the topic and understood what was happening I wanted to give it more stars for the author taking us so deep into the main characters mind and experiences but I don’t like to work this hard to follow or understand the subject of my leisure reads.
