The pacing was too slow for me

Though it took me an eternity to finish, A Day of Fallen Night had me captivated from the start. Each character’s pov made my heart sing and cry and dance and yell, though I will hold a soft spot for Tuva. Her warmth and strength urge me to fight to be a better partner and mother.
This book is for mothers and lovers and those with shields on their hearts and those they are willing to lower their guard for.
The imagery in this story has me wishing I could just step into their world and experience it all for myself.
A completely worthy read for any looking to be swept into a world they will not easily forget.

Devastating and beautiful, so worth the read. There were moments where I wondered if it could match the priory of the orange tree, and it did. Shannon made another story both unique and relevant to the universe, and while I knew how the story ended (from lore/history) I did not and could not anticipate the way that it ended either. Surprising, haunting, I will be thinking about this story and series for awhile.

Note: I read this before Priory, so I can’t compare A Day of Fallen Night to Priory.

I thought this book was going to be about women empowerment, but it turns out it’s more about motherhood. The first half of the story felt slow. Even after a few hundred pages, there was nothing particularly special—like, if those pages were cut, I could still follow the story just fine. I barely felt any emotional attachment to the characters; it only happened once or twice.

I used to hate Glorian for her clumsy and selfish actions, but later I realized she’s also a victim of her kingdom’s stupid rules and her parents.

On the positive side, I liked how the Priory has different family roles (at least different from those in my society): women go into battle and become warriors, while men handle household tasks and support the warriors on the battlefield. I also liked the romantic relationships between the couples—there wasn’t too much, and there was no unnecessary affection. My favorite dynamic was between Dumai and Nikeya. I feel bad for their future, though.

As with The priory of the orange tree, I love the queer representation, the strong female characters and all the POC characters in this book. I found it more difficult to stay just as attached to this book as I did with Priory, but I still enjoyed it very much. Samantha Shannon writes everything with such beauty, I am constantly in awe of her writing. Will definitely read more of hers!
