Fascinating memoir of Chester Nez, a WW2 Marine and Navajo Code Talker. The memoir also covers his childhood and post military life.

There is nothing fancy about this book. Still, I found it powerful and so very clear in its simplicity, and David Colacci did a superb job as narrator.

I enjoyed this a lot. It seemed like it was going to be pretty heavily focused on his military time at the beginning of the book, but it soon backed up to talk about his life leading up to the war. Of course, there was a lot about wartime, but I like that I got other information and context, as well.
I met Chester Nez at the Santa Fe Days in Carrollton, Texas a few years ago. He was there with Judith Schiess Avila promoting this book. Chester truly led a remarkable life and served his country bravely even when it didn't consider him a member of society that deserved equal rights. It's sad that it took so long for our country to honor the service that the Navajo code talkers did. Too many died before receiving recognition and many never were able to tell their families of their part in the war. The book is a memoir and tells Chester's life story. He suffered many losses in his lifetime, but he seemed to be able to keep things in perspective and always preservere. I'm honored to have been able to have met him and to have a copy of his memoir signed by him.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It details a vital piece of U.S. military history one in which the Navajo culture and the U.S. Government war machine cooperated and excelled. If only all Native and US history was such a success.
As a service-member I enjoyed the book. As a New Mexican I enjoyed the book and understood his descriptions of the landscape.
If you are a fan of military history, or native culture or biographies this will be an educational and enjoyable book.

For book club we chose memoirs. Whenever we choose a topic for book club I spend a lot of time searching for books that I have never heard of before. This is the third memoir that I found that I just couldn't wait to read. I lucked out and picked this book during a Audible 2 for 1 sale. I believe that listening to this book gave it another wonderful dimension.
I appreciated this book because it gave an overview of Chester Nez's life, childhood to long after WWII and Korea. The insights into his childhood and the Navajo culture were especially interesting to me. I have gained a great respect for the Navajo young men that went off to fight in WWII. They were invaluable to defeating the Japanese. They were on campaign after campaign because their unbreakable code, that they had created, was such an asset.
I would recommend this book and in my opinion the best way to read it is by audiobook. It felt like he was right there telling me his story.
