WHAT A BLAST! Such a fun, engrossing read. Excellent scene-setting, excellent mystery-weaving, excellent use of multiple time periods. Stevie was a PERFECT protagonist, David an IMPECCABLE Darcy-esque figure, Nick and Janelle such supportive and three-dimensional best friend figures. Plus there's the subtext happening between Iris and Flora which I live for, and the ABSOLUTELY ICONIC AND COMPLETELY ASPIRATIONAL Leonard Holmes Nair (of course I loved the grumpy trash boy, who's surprised). AHHHH just what a good cast and story. Can't wait for the second and third installments of the trilogy!

Oh, also, finally, bigtime shoutout to the normalizing of queer identities and relationships throughout the book despite a heterosexual pairing being the main couple. Would love to see more het YAs do the same.

After finishing the first part of the Truly Devious-Series I am quie conflicted what to make of it.

It is definitely tailored towards a younger readership and I guess this i a cosy muder mystery for teenagers that gives off a great dark academia vibe.
The set of characters is diverse, though some of them seemed a bit too cliché in my opinion. It also took a while for the whole story to become not only entertaining but most of all thrilling and exciting.

What put me off the most is the fact that you have to continue with the series in order to know how the mystery will develop. So there is no clear ending to the book and furthermore a massive cliff-hanger.

For someone, who is familiar with reading crime novels, this was not completely my cup of tea. However, I very much liked the whole frame setting of the kidnapping and murder happening in 1936.

I loved this book and finished it in one, but now I don’t have the second and it left me on such a cliff hanger!

Honestly, Truly Devious blew me away. The writing was beautiful and I loved the alternating storylines. Stevie was such a fresh, fun, quirky character and I cannot wait for book 2, The Vanishing Stairs. I will say that this book would have been a 4.5 stars but that ending was awful.

Soooooo, I wanted to get away from my usual romance and decided to dive into this murder mystery. Unfortunately I didn't realize it was part of an in-progress trilogy and I have to wait until 2019 for the next book. I'm heart broken, I was just starting to get into everything, we got some exciting news and I wanted to see where it lead us.

To be honest I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this book. But I do want to know what happened and I did find it pretty enjoyable to read, so I'm guessing I'm feeling pretty good. It would be easier to say if I knew how it all ends but we will have to wait for that.

Probably 2.5 in actuality?

Basically: this was another book written by someone who doesn’t understand New England culture, set in New England, with characters conveniently not from New England (because no one likes them New Englanders).

I don’t like amateur detective stories, I’ve decided. There is nothing satisfying about some kid withholding information from proper channels to feed her own ego trip. People are ALWAYS collateral damage in these stories and it frustrates me no end. I don’t care if you get into the FBI, kid. I care if people LIVE.

also I’m tired of ensemble casts and I spent the entire book picturing David as an actual person I know, which was really not ideal at ALL.
