The unique value in this book is the section that goes into detail on all the things humans most commonly ingest. He discusses each food/drink in terms of health, but also culture, history, culinary use, and environmental impact.

Lots of great research and factual information but a slog to read. Too repetitive to be an interesting read (goes through each individual food stuff in turn) but too wordy and lacking in subheadings and bullet points to be a good reference tool. Summaries of take-away points at the end of each chapter often seem too personal/anecdotal and don't always relate to what's been said before. There was a better booking hiding inside this.
