My first Rushdie novel and I can definitely say it won't be my last. Slow at times, but looking back from the end it was those slow parts that ended up putting the later portion of the novel in perspective. And wow only 286 pages but it felt like 500, and in the best way possible. Every part of the novel (even parts I thought were extraneous) were packed with some kind of message or parable or goofy quip. I highly recommend it. Even at it's strangest and most fantasy-y moments it did what good fantasy is supposed to do and made me think about the human condition.

Felt more like a textbook retelling of events rather than a novel of the events.

I was a bit disappointed by this book. I recognize Rushdie's style from reading The Satanic Verses, but that story felt richer to me, and that might be why it didn't feel as messy as TYMTEN.

I might be under-rating it, I’ll admit. It is unbelievably and unsurprisingly well written - Rushdie is a great for his imagination, wit, subtle complexity to be in awe of - but I personally was not as taken with this plot. It was a solid story if you appreciate fantasy, but it lacked the existential considerations & incredible character development I expected after reading his novel Quichotte. (Per that novel, I cannot recommend enough!!!)

Quite possibly my favorite of Rushdie's books.

adventurous medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes

Someone else's review had said it read more like a history of jinn and I would agree with that. I liked the information and enjoyed the story mostly. I didn't like that it jumped back and forth and that the fight for the world seemed secondary. I was also annoyed at the amount of time spent on how much jinn liked sex. We got it the first few times.
I otherwise liked the story and appreciated the biting satire.

It was okay. I was expecting more from this author. I felt like I missed something along the way.
