Such a rare, moving, haunting novel. Absolutely stunning from beginning to end. I cannot recommend it enough.

If you have ever asked yourself, "What if vampires were boomers?" then this is the perfect book for you. 400 pages of vampires not understanding the Internet, hating alternative subcultures, and most oddly of all, being aggressively heterosexual. Look at the cover of this book right now and tell me you would not be expecting something sapphic. I know I was! Maybe it makes sense to some readers that vampires in this universe enjoy living with their same-sex besties for decades, but it didn't make sense to me. Overall, the writing was generic, the characters were either boring or unlikable, and the plot was slow moving and predictable. I definitely wouldn't recommend this one, even to a diehard vampire fan. It was an extremely easy read, however.

Annie Bot started out strong but ultimately missed the mark for me. The first two-thirds were great, but eventually the novel became too empathetic to the abusive partner. After reading about the sexual trauma Annie experiences, I didn't really want to empathize or even hear about her abuser. It was a pretty good book with a satisfying ending, it just wasn't the perfect fit for me. Definitely check out the trigger warnings, some scenes were pretty disturbing and extremely difficult to read.

Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino tells the story of Adina, an alien sent to Earth as a baby to learn about humans and report her findings to her species via fax. Despite its title, Beautyland is not a one of those books that are really popular right now that don't say anything other than "the beauty industry is bad." It is much, much more than that. It is moving, darkly humorous, deeply introspective. But most importantly of all, Bertino bravely writes what I have been saying for years: The Beatles are overrated and men who like them are bad.

Definitely give this one a read!
