The pacing got me a little bit. Don’t expect the rest of the book to be like the first part. The second part especially almost made me DNF it, but I’m glad I stuck with it. It feels incredibly fancy-fantasy.

ALSO!! When reading the last chapter, please listen to I Hear a Symphony by Cody Fry. If you got attached to the characters, you’ll cry.

I didn’t expect to want to read the sequel, but now I need to.

The book itself just didn’t hold up as well as I remember, but the audiobook is excellent.

The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis

Did not finish book. Stopped at 6%.
Hard pass. There is an extremely graphic
sexual assault scene in which an older black girl assaults Beth, who is 8, and then cusses her out in the morning, calling her the “ugliest white girl she’s ever seen.”
Considering this was written by a white man, the amount of detail and description he put into that scene, and also making one of (if not the only) black girl in his book a huge stereotype, it feels gross and predatory and racist. Nobody needed details on what happened in that scene.

Oh my gods I need everyone and their cousin to read this book. Have you ever thought of the most poetic and creative ways to slowly kill awful people? Did you never get over the vampire & werewolf craze? Do you want plot twists that will so artfully show how the author carefully plotted every little detail for you, and then reveal them so hard that you get whiplash a million times over? Then this is the book for you!!!
