is “slow burn” a code for a very weird and fucking disgusting book? i don’t mind reading weird shit in books, but this was sold to me as a “slow burn” book (bc apparently the third book they get together) but wtf????

the romance that is supposed to happen in the later book makes me sick because ???? ew? and although some fanart was beautifully done, the couple is creepy, idc what anyone says

no no no no no. no.

and if the whole content of the story wasn’t enough to make me give this 1 star, there is NO PLOT and the world building is weak.

also, this book is sooo boring

literally not one single good thing about this. i’m mad this was the first book i finished this is year

booooooring

still trying to understand why did people told me this is a high fantasy book because let me tell you: this ain’t it, chief.

i was expecting a heavy world building and badass sirens killing men with some cool fight scenes but this didn’t happen. this is just a bland retelling of a little mermaid. boring boring boring.

lira, the main character, gets involved in a kind-of-but-not-really slow burn with prince elian, the siren killer, who she is suppose to kill. elian is boring, lira is boring and their romance is boring.

the world building? weak. the characters? boring and nothing special. the ending? bad.

this book was a huge disappointment and i wish the premise matched the story because then i wouldn’t have been interested by what my friend told me and i wouldn’t have wasted my time on this. i’m sad.

this is not special or unique. it’s ok for what it is. it’s entertaining but completely forgettable.

there was no depth to the characters or the relationships they build. they felt flat throughout the whole book and made it impossible for me to connect to or even care for any of them.

i knew going into this book that i wasn’t going to love it, but i thought it would be at least fun to read. nope.
i was prepare to love jude like everyone that reads this trilogy seems to. nope.
jude, although i can understand why people like her, felt like every other bland ya protagonist.

one thing that i knew was going to make this reading experience not the best for me was the enemies to lovers romance everyone talks about. why? because i freaking *hate* enemies to lovers.
and yeah, okay, i hate it but i can appreciate any trope if it’s done well. i know that the second book probably develops their relationship more but as for an introduction to the characters and their romance... this wasn’t special.

i think that if holly black took more time to develop her characters, the romance would feel more natural and the story wouldn’t be so boring.

i didn’t hate this book. i didn’t like or care for anything here and the writing wasn’t the best, but it was ok for what it intended to be. nothing special or unique, but fun. i literally read this in one day.

i feel like this review was very badly written but my thoughts are all over the place and i’m writing them as they come, so sorry about that.

2 solid stars for this book. won’t be reading the other two, obviously.
With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

damn near perfect

i honestly don’t know how to articulated how much i loved this book. i switched to the audiobook about halfway through the story and wow it made this reading experience so much more beautiful.

elizabeth acevedo has a way with words that always makes me speechless after i finish reading her books, it’s truly amazing. the audiobook is narrated by her so she knows how to make her story and her characters come to life. listening to her tell this story is just as magical as emoni’s cooking and i can’t recommend the audiobook (and the book itself) enough!

this is in my heart a 4.5 star book and the only thing that made me stop giving it 5 stars was the romance. her LI was nice and i liked him enough throughout the story and with emoni but... that’s it. it didn’t feel like it needed to be there, i think that if the romance didn’t existed the story and the characters wouldn’t miss anything, and that’s the only not-so-amazing thing i have to say about this book.

other than that this was beautiful, magical and exactly what i expected from acevedo.
i recommend this for everyone everywhere!!!
