Kill Switch by Penelope Douglas

The way that Damon was an absolute terror throughout the first two books made me despise him as a character, however. Once I got deep into his book I couldn’t help but have sympathy for the man. With that being said I do not approve of him using his trauma as a lame excuse to treat others the way that he does, it honestly had me rolling my eyes knowing that if he just got over his shit he could be such an amazing man. I felt like there was an underlying big non communication trope with Damon and Winter but in such a beautiful way I was speed-reading through chapters to get into the other’s head just so I could know. I was originally so scared to read this third book I quite literally had to force myself into reading it and pat on the back of my old self for doing that.
A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson

This was one of those books that I physically bought due to the hype on TikTok, yet I waited two months before getting to it. I will say that this is probably a much better read in October due to its slightly haunting allure but still such a good read. If you are as obsessed with vampires the way I am then you will devour this book from Dracula’s wife's POV. I was afraid of how dragged out it might have been with just the two characters but the author adds in two more side characters along the way adding to the drama and dark adventures. If you haven’t read it already I highly recommend it, it just feels like a classic book.
Nightfall by Penelope Douglas

The entire reason I read this series was because TikTok told me that Will is supposed to be my ultimate book boyfriend. The commitment this man obligated himself as Emory’s lover had me gobsmacked. If you ask me today, I would still say that Will deserves someone better but hey, he loves her and we all know the things we would do for love. I will say do not be scared by the length of this book because Penelope answers all the typical ‘what ifs’ that you might have about the previous three couples. This author and the way she plots her books are so beautiful. If you have not yet read a Penelope Douglas book, please I beg of you do not read Credence first because it is a little bit more advanced. But instead, start with this Devil’s Night series and let me know who you are drooling over afterward.
Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez

Ahh, my first Abby Jimenez book. I was so afraid to read her books considering how much hype they get but boy am I glad I did because I will never see contemporary romance books the same. The way she covers mental health in this book so well had my emotions all over the place. One moment I was smiling and giggling and the next I found myself angry and teary-eyed. We all can’t ignore the J-named man, Justin. I have never known a J-named man to be so aware of his own personal impact on those around him so much so that he sacrifices his own dreams and aspirations for others. The individual problems that each of these characters have feel so real that I couldn’t help but connect and empathize with them. The way Abby Jimenez incorporated Justin into Emma into each other’s lives was more than just a curse-breaking cure, they fit so well that it felt like they were helping each other in such hard times in their personal lives. It was beautiful and I can not wait to be teary eyed over another one of her books.
Drop Dead by Lily Chu

It took me so long to finish this audiobook, gosh I felt like I was in a bit of a reading slump in August so I tried to curve it with audiobooks but even that was failing. Nadine and Wes have this childhood-to-enemics-to-lovers trope when they are for forced to come together to write about this mystery that Dot wants to share with them. LIly Chu did add some underlying personal issues to help establish character growth throughout the book, however. This one was just not my favorite out of all the ones I have read or listened to. I personally felt like I could have done something better with my time.

It feels like a bit of a letdown, reading this for the second time when I have now read at least one hundred other books. Due to the hype, I bought the complete first edition series in 2019 when I originally picked up reading again. I got two books into this series and shelved it since. I admire the progress Lily makes in this second book and how loving and supportive Loren is through it all, I just feel like the sex scenes (even if they represent how her addiction is represented) is a bit too much for me. I want to love this series as much as everyone else did but I fear I waited too long. My goal midyear was to read the complete series so when people pointed to my library and asked if I had read these I could say yes, even if my reviews weren’t the most positive. I am just committed to the goal even if I have to pull myself through it all. Someone wish me luck or at least let me know it gets better and I’m not alone.

In this story, there are several key characters. Nia is the daughter of Reese and Gwen, seemingly normal parents. She is married to Timo, a thoughtful husband. Both Nia and Timo have successful careers and lead a normal life until a mysterious event occurs in their small town of Williwaw, in which Nia becomes involved. Stella is the mother of Cooper and the ex-wife of Lyla, who is also investigating the mysterious event while dealing with custody issues. Marin provides insight into the mystery and becomes a love interest for Stella. As the story unfolds, we witness how each character's involvement weaves into the narrative, leading to numerous surprising twists and turns. Eventually, the story concludes with deserved happy endings for all the characters involved.
