As a fellow Vampire Academy reader I knew how this book was going to end. The similarities between Xaden and Dimitri are just too many.
Aside from that I really liked Onyx Storm.
I loved the world building in this one! It made me want to reread everything from the beginning and write all the discovered Islands and information on a huge bulletin board. I don't think I ever had that feeling for any book where there were so many information - and let's be honest. There are MANY!
Rebecca namedrops left and write and I found it hard at times to follow everything..

Violet
Violet still is such a badass character and I still think it's so cool that she is so smart. Such a cool change to the usual dumbass characters in other books.

Xaden
I do think that Xaden was at times a bit annoying, which was due to him turning Venin which is why I am excusing his behavior. Also Xaden's love for Violet has me melting...
He cups the back of my neck and pulls me within inches of his face—close enough to kiss. “I could reach the rank of Maven, lead armies of dark wielders against everyone we care for, and watch every vein in my body turn red as I channel all the power in the Continent, and I would still love you. What I did doesn’t change that. I’m not sure anything can.”
Alltogether it was very compelling and also heartbreaking seeing him this way.
The end of him channeling to save Sgeayl.. I can't - I mean yes I knew that was the likely outcome since he didn't turn full Venin but it still hit deep..

Dragons
Obviously Andarna, Tairn and all the other Dragons are still my favorite aspect about this series.
“Then practice evenly dispersing enough magic to keep all your extremities warm during flight, because your wings won’t hold the weight of this ice,” Tairn growls into the falling snow. “‘Your wings won’t hold the weight of this ice,’” Andarna blatantly mocks him. “And yet yours miraculously carry the burden of your ego.”
“Go find a sheep and let the adults work.”

Andarna first being rejected by her family and then completely leaving was HEARTBREAKING. When I tell you that I cried I need you to picture me sobbing. Like I couldn't continue reading sobbing.

I guess all that's left to say about the ending is.. wow.

Things We Never Got Over

Lucy Score

DID NOT FINISH: 54%

I just didn’t like the writing style. It felt like you’re watching a movie where absolutely nothing happens for hours. You’d get bored. The smut wasn’t pleasant to read at all. What do you mean he looks like a viking and pisses off his front porch? No thanks.
Also we’re past people calling periods “shark attack” or “code red”. Just call it a period.
Not my book at all.

Alright.. this is a tough review to write.
I really wanted to love it.. The slowburn was great but the book lacks originality.
I knew it was going to be a Hunger Games kinda book, but I feel like if you make up a class system and trials they should at least make sense. Why the trails? It was never explained - they just had to do them. Also why were those people chosen? Also never explained. The magic system with everyone having powers was really the only original thought to it.

I'm not at all a fan of love triangles and I was constantly asking myself why Kitt was involved at all. That made no sense - also the resistance felt like a bunch of dumb ass people who have no idea how any of it works. It seems like their revolution ended before it even started. Who had this stupid idea to just show up and expect everything to change?

What I liked tho was the characters of Payden and Kai. It was a bit much talking about the ocean and wonderful, lush, aquamarine eyes for the hundreth time, but other than that they were likable. Lovetriangle felt unnecessary and enemies to lovers was none existant. Maybe in the next one or throughout the series..

I will read the second one because the hype is so big, but my expectations are low..

I had to read it at some point because the royal family is just such a huge part of society and no matter the controversy around the book.
There were so many things I find wrong with this book. Harry states pretty early on in the book that he has a hard time recalling dialoges but not events and how they happened. But then he recalls so many conversations with other people and always comes of as the reasonable one.. I don't know if I can trust that? I mean yes, it's a memoir and yes, that makes it one-sided - but also, does that mean that you have to set yourself in the best light possible?
There's absolutely no doubt Harry has undergone an insane amount of physical and mental hardship and he's shown great resilience - he clearly is a very dedicated and talented soldier, even tho he wasn't able to continue doing what he loved due to those risks.

What I found good was the way he openly talked about himself, his drug abuse and the Nazi scandal everone knows about. He humbly also says admits that he needs to improve.

The ending (the last 100 pages or so) felt very rushed - I thought this book will put greater emphasis on the whole stepping back debacle. But it felt like a retelling of his life before Meghan and then 10 chapters on his life with Meghan. Which neccessarily isn't bad, but calling the book "Spare" and printing under "Price Harry" gives off different intentions than what it was actually about.

No matter on which side you're on, all the events happened are very sad. Physically fighting with your brother, cutting ties with your family (regardless of not cutting ties with the queen) there are lessons to be learned on all sides in this crazy family drama. I think the press played a huge role in this (weather it's all true and Harry really doesn't blame his family and only the press doesn't really matter) and the truth to the whole thing probably lies somewhere inbetween. Unfortunately we will never know because the palace will never talk about any of the allegations and it won't be something anyone will talk about in a couple of years.

I went into it with the wrong expectations- I thought this would be cozy christmas instead it was a snowstorm christmas drama.. besides that I liked it and it was a well thought out story. Characters were a bit blunt with barely any depth. I didn’t buy the whole issues thing.. just didn’t feel it..
