I liked this one because it gave me new insights into things that happened in Sorrow & Starlight, and it also gave us information we didn’t get at the end of book 8. It was a unique journey for the series and I’m anxious to start the final book. It’s been a bittersweet journey, I can’t believe it’s almost come to a close.

This book was so good! Not only was the world building fantastic, the character development and the richness of the story was so engaging. The build was perfectly paced and I loved that it kept me guessing. I am only sad that now I have to wait for the next book.

Editing to add that the audiobook for this is fantastic.
slow-paced

This one is a beast of a book and I was not sure how I would feel during the ride because book 7 crushed me so intensely but I’m so glad I continued on and stuck through the heartbreak. There are 2 more books so the story isn’t finished, but I’m absolutely going to continue on. As I’ve said with pretty much every book in the series before this- I can’t stop now!

I’m hovering between 4 and 4.5 stars on this simply because it was so long and I feel like there were definitely things that could have been omitted or shortened that would have still delivered the same impact, but these two authors continue to weave a story that has me hopelessly hooked.

I really liked Lukas as a character- he really made the book for me. I liked the narrators for the audiobook and I think that helped me to be invested. I also thought it was a cool and unique idea to set this story around swimmers and divers. I thought the scope of the story in that context was fun to read.
I liked Scarlett as a character in some ways but I also really disliked the way she would shy away from acknowledging her true feelings in many situations- with friends, her diving, and with Lukas. That’s what knocked it down for me, because I can’t stand miscommunication, especially when it’s a recurring theme. The ending did redeem some of that though. Overall this was a fun ride, but I am coming to the conclusion that Ali Hazelwood may not be the author for me.

I absolutely LOVED this book. I really enjoyed the world building and the way the magic worked for the immortals. I thought it was so interesting how the mortals and the immortals were connected, and I liked the characters. They held my attention and kept me engaged, always wanting to know more.

I also found myself surprised throughout, not easily guessing where things were going. I listened to the audio for this one and I think that may have helped me to immerse in the story, but even if I hadn’t listened to someone narrate, I think I would have loved this just as much. It just felt like a rich and beautiful world with unique politics and relationships. This was a slow burn romantasy that gave me everything I love in a love story. It builds on concepts of familial love and where we belong in the world as well as romantic love and it really resonated with me.

There were a few times where some words felt repetitively utilized (such as rankled) but it wasn’t enough to knock it down for me because I was so here for the vibe. I can fully admit that it’s entirely possible there are flaws here, but if they exist, I am personally blind to them- this book just hit so hard and I will definitely be reading it again.
lighthearted fast-paced

The story at its core was so cute but I felt like the spice was written a little…clinically? It may have been the way the narrator read the story that made it feel that way to me. I loved the characters and the basis of the story was great though.

I really don’t like the miscommunication trope and at the start of this, I was worried that was going to be a theme that would pull me out of the book, but I feel that while that was present, it didn’t frustrate the way it normally would. The main characters grow as individuals, but also together and that made it worth it for me. I liked the setting of the story a lot, but I did feel like some of this was a little repetitive and some of the phrasing was a little clunky (such as man mountain- I get it but it read weird). Overall I liked this one, there were just some things about it that I think could have been done differently to improve the flow.
fast-paced

I started and finished this book in one day. It was an easy read- the world and magic don’t feel overly complicated as can sometimes be the case in fantasy series, but I really enjoyed it. It did remind me of Defy The Night by Brigid Kemmerer a little bit, but there are some major distinctions that make this its own story. The vibes were just similar. Some of it was a little bit predictable but not in a way that turned me off from the series, I am invested enough that I definitely will be continuing on to the next book.

I don’t want to talk about it. 😭

Soul crushing is an understatement here, but like a phoenix rising from the ashes, I will press on because it cannot end like that. All hope seems totally lost right now but I refuse to accept it.

I’m so scared for book 8.

I stared at the wall, completely numb, for a significant amount of time at the end of this book. I don’t have words other than I knew this would destroy me and I was not wrong. How in the world am I supposed to wait two years to carry on with this story?

I will also say this was my favorite book of the series to date. I loved the character development and growth and I also loved that we get to see some of the support characters more center stage. This was fantastic and I am so happy that I didn’t give up after Iron Flame.

I’m going to go curl up in a corner to process now. 🥹
