4.25 stars!

Such a beautiful and heartfelt collection, I adored so many of these.

I can see it’s possible I have made a mistake.
I can see that it’s possible I have constructed
this story of disappointment and grief:
the song of abandonment I was trained to expect.

I just want you to know I haven’t given up.
I’m still searching for the message that
I’ve heard so much about;
I’d like to look at a boat or a bird without thinking
of escape.

There were a few small/passing comments about women that I wasn't a big fan of, so not five stars.

it really never ends, and yet goodness persists

wrote down a lot of thoughts that I hope to develop into a more cohesive review, but this was incredible.

The exploration of grief and pain, and the connection between humanity and the wilderness, was explored in such a profound way. The hold that trauma has and the seeming inability to escape it alone, and the importance of connection, I'm truly just in awe at how well this book captures all these difficult emotions and frames them in such a comprehensive light.

The bond between Inti and Aggie was so gorgeous to witness.

The conversations around conservation and humanity's place in nature are so important. So often we distance ourselves under the guise of "not interfering" with nature, as if we are not also part of it. There were also some beautiful discussions on rewilding and everyday things that people can do to make a change.

4.25- 4.75 probably. I feel like I would’ve loved this just a tad more if I’d read it before reading Priory because I felt a bit like I knew too much of this story, specifically the parts that gave it suspense.

2.75 or low 3 stars.

ok, so an interesting concept but I wanted more buildup and eeriness to make it more suited for the “horror” novel that it’s billed as. It seemed like it wanted to lean more into the physiological element, but it didn’t have enough depth to reach it. It was honestly a bit boring.

also there’s so much discussion in reviews for this about the aspect of animal cruelty/death and I think that’s for a larger conversation about how people love reading about human cruelty and death (both true crime and fiction) but care more for animals which makes it more taboo? It’s just interesting to consider how people consider true crime more palatable than fiction animal death that didn’t even occur on the page. But I digress.

There was another piece of this regarding women’s healthcare and the dismissal of women’s problems by doctors which I think could have been expanded on.

I also really don’t know what I was supposed to take away from this? It kept hinting at something more happening but never reached anything so it just left you with nothing.

An interesting concept, but seemed to lack depth. Nothing in the book really wowed me in any way, but nothing was necessarily bad either.

Also, these ethnographers are terrible!

I absolutely adored Ead and Sabran; Their characters were so well crafted and filled with emotional intensity. All of their stakes felt very real and consequential, making their actions more understandable.

I had some issues with Tane's chapters, particularly in the beginning, with the competition to become a dragonrider.
At no point are we actually told how many people she is competing against; all we know is that there are 11 spots available, and considering we only get introduced to a max of 5 other characters in this competition, the stakes seem nonexistent. It was so clear that she would get chosen not only because to us, there appear to be more spots than people competing (though there are not, it feels like it), but also because she never had any real issues in the competition to make the stakes higher. It would have been much more interesting if she actually had any struggles, rather than picking apart her perfect performance and not believing in herself. If she knows herself to be so talented and strong, and she easily proves this in every competition, she should have complete confidence that she will get chosen. Because of this, I had a lot of trouble reading from her perspective in the beginning because everything felt so clear-cut as to what would happen.

The book itself was obviously long, but everything that happened felt necessary to the story and allowed for the ending to feel right and not rushed in the slightest, given the amount it built up to it. I don't always love multiple POVs (because there's almost always one that I don't like), but I loved the way this worked to build up the story from all across the world, and getting to see how everything flowed together.

Also, I adore Sabran and Ead so much, their relationship was so beautiful, and I loved seeing Sabran grow in her understanding of the world through it. Their ending made me cry, and I did not need that at 2am!

Overall, I really loved these characters and this world. I feel like I haven't been so excited by a story in a while, so this was a wonderful read, and I can't wait to read more in this world.

the writing was good but I honestly just didn't like it. I think there's a level of how much sense a book needs to make for me to enjoy it, and I'm all for books that are weird and odd, but this was lacking the why too much. I get the idea of what was causing everything, but I truly just don't get why anything was happening or why it mattered that it even was. It just left too much unsaid I think

a really cool premise for a story and it brought me a lot of nostalgia
