Mon Dieu mon Dieu mon Dieu…. Magnifique.
Fun fun fun! Got kind of bored in the beginning of the second half, but I think it’s more on me and my disastrous attention span than the book’s fault. Vicious is action upon action mixed with dark characters and complicated relationships + a very nice found family that I don’t think enough people talk about. Liked it a lot. (I did think the ending was a bit rushed though, would’ve liked a longer scene between Eli and Victor since well… the entire book kind of builds up to it)

Fun book, nothing stood out exactly but I definitely found it interesting. I really liked the historical references and it did teach me a lot about society in Shanghai at that time. However, the fantasy plots did not make a lot of sense to me. I also did not particularly care about what was happening. The romance also felt a bit bland, it was really great at the beginning but I found its ‘resolution’ a bit too easy. Kind of felt like the characters lost most of the fun aspects of their personality about halfway through… What I wanted was angst upon angst and enemies and hatred and tensionand a LOT more romance. I did not really get that. This sounds iind of bad but I wnated it to be more… toxic? I mean this is Romeo and Juliet !! Not to say I didn’t like the book, it was just not my favourite. Also REALLY loved the side characters, especially Kathleen and Marshall and Ben. Excited to see more of them.

Some stories I loved, other I didn’t, but overall this was a beautiful glimpse into the simple but often touching lives of the people of turn of the century Dublin, both rich and poor, old and young. It’s not anything crazy, not romantic, it’s just realistic look into their reality, and I quite liked that. I wished I had enough knowledge to get more of the references though! I will admit it was a bit tedious at times, especially cause I didn’t care about some of the characters, but I still think this was an enjoyable and interesting read, as well as a good intro to Joyce. Also a great insight into the Irish mind pre-independance in terms of politics, mindset etc.

I don’t really know what I think about this book. I really liked the beginning and thought it would end up something I loved, but then in the middle it kind of fell flat for me. I liked the science fiction elements and the plot was definitely interesting, even though it felt a bit confusing at times (but that’s probably because I’m not a big science-fiction writer). I was a very much disappointed with the romance in this;, it wasn’t awful by any means, but it just didn’t really make me feel anything. There was zero to no tension between the characters, and instead of a slow burn, the book kind of felt like a switch had turned on at some point and all of a sudden they loved each other with barely any evolution. So not the biggest fan of that. I will say the characters were very endearing and I did like them a lot, and the ending definitely picked it up. The middle part was definitely what I found lacking in he story. I was also a bit mad that Jainan’s previous relationship, which obviously had a huge impact on him, did not really have an impact on his relationship with Kiem in the end. The ending to that sort of character arc he had just felt a bit too neat and proper to actually feel realistic. I would’ve liked more angst between the characters I guess and also a bit more in depth look at the impacts of the Empire in this world. I thought for a while that this would have more commentary on the issues of Empire and colonisation, which would’ve been really interesting, but again it was just perhaps a bit too lighthearted. This was a fun and entertaining read and I liked it, I just feel like a couple of changes and it could’ve been great.
Not a masterpiece but funfun!! We love hot villains, nice heroes who discover maybe they’re not so nice, inner conflicts and heartbreaking relationships (when they love each other deeply but cannot be together because of their diverging destinies, YES give me more!!!). Seriously, Leigh Bardugo I love you. And very happy to have FINALLY met Nikolai, who I am very excited to read more about in the King of Scars duology. One thing I maybe didn’t like: although it was quite long, I somehow felt that not a lot was going on compared to the first book. Objectively it did so just a weird impression I guess. Maybe because the Darkling wasn’t present all that much and he obviously adds a lot of thrill to the story. It was nice to see Alina evolve on her own though. Another thing: although the evolution of their relationship really made me suffer in the best way, sometimes the fights between Mal and Alina were a bit too frequent and felt repetitive. They were also annoying at times, but I mean, realistically, who isn’t? Still, I really enjoyed my read. Very excited for the next one.
Quelle masterclass!
