Dunno if I like the twist at the end, but it was interesting enough to warrant reading the next one when it comes out.

Probably shouldn’t have waited til my mid-30s to read it but better later than never. Dune!!

Given the title (which is what sold me I literally didn’t know anything else about it), I think I expected something snarkier. Certainly wasn’t ready for what it actually was, a memoir from a cancer survivor who also is a historian of the “prosperity gospel.” That last bit provides interesting extra context to the author’s journey, one that is emotionally gut punching to be sure. But it provides the context, not so much the content. It’s well written, and if you have the emotional capacity, I’d say it’s a good, short read.

It’s been many years since I’ve ventured into Bell town. And it’s nice to see that he remains consistent in the things I both like and dislike about him as a writer. Having read this makes me wonder what he’s up to in quarantine, how does that affect his thinking? Cause I’d like to read a more grounded Rob Bell, if such a thing exists.

This was a really intensely uncomfortable read, spurred on by reading about Weil’s intensely uncomfortable life. And that discomfort goes into overdrive on the topic of Weil’s relationship to Judaism (though it ends up being more complicated than a surface reading would suggest.) That aside, it makes for a fairly compelling read and the consistency in her writings and real life is a rare quality to find in a person.
